Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After 110 minutes of evenly played soccer, the Eastern Michigan University women's team battled Ohio University to a Mid-American Conference opening match, 0-0, draw at Scicluna Field Friday, Sept. 24.
The Bobcats barely outshot the Eagles, 12-11, with EMU tallying seven of shots on goal compared to three for OU. Eastern Michigan garnered a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to convert. With the draw, the Eagles move to 3-5-2 on the season, 0-0-1 in MAC play while the Bobcats move to 3-3-2 (0-0-1 MAC).
Senior Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) led Eastern Michigan in shots, coming off the bench to record three. Freshman Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) was the lon Eagle with more than one shot on goal as she recorded two. The Eagles gained a prime scoring chance late in the second half when Clarke took a free kick from just outside the penalty area following an Ohio foul. With congestion in the box, she passed it to a teammate who couldn't get a decent shot off, squandering one of the few opportunities for EMU on the afternoon.
It marked the second straight scoreless meeting between both squads as they battled to the same result last season in Athens, Ohio Sept. 27, 2009. The Eagles and Bobcats are nearly as even in the all-time series as they were on Friday with EMU claiming the 7-6-4 advantage through 17 meetings.
Senior goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) made three saves while her counterpart, Mattie Liston, deflected seven shots away. Each posted their third shutouts of the season in the match. For Budani, it was the 19th shutout of her career.
EMU will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 26, when it takes on Akron at Scicluna Field at 1 p.m. The Zips are coming off a 3-0 defeat to defending MAC Champion Central Michigan from Friday.
