YPSILANTI, Mich.  (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in the series-opener to Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponent, the University of Toledo, 7-2, at Oestrike Stadium, Friday, April 11.

Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio/ Mohawk) led the way for the Eagles on offense, going 3-for-3 with one double as he reached base safely in all four plate appearances. Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) drove in both of Eastern Michigan's runs with one sacrifice fly and one base hit in the ninth inning.

The winning pitcher was Toledo's Jacob Tabor (1-3) while EMU's Ethan LaPointe (Windsor, Ontario/Holy Names) (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

How it Happened
The game opened with four scoreless innings and was highlighted by Eagles' starting pitcher Drew Beckner (Westerville, Ohio/Big Walnut/Charleston) who twirled four no-hit innings with six strikeouts.

Toledo struck first in the fifth inning with an RBI single to gain the 1-0 lead. Hugo drove in Vance with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring the score to 1-1 in the ensuing half inning.

Drew Norris (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley/Utah/Johnson C.C.) entered the game to relieve Beckner in the seventh, and proceeded to get the final out of the inning via the strikeout.

LaPointe took the mound to start the eighth inning, where the Rockets scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead as Ethan Davis (Brownstown, Ind./Brownstown Central/Marian/Frontier C.C.) relieved LaPointe four batters into the frame.

Michael Pfeiffer (Brownsboro, Ala./Huntsville/Northwest-Shoals C.C.) relieved Davis to start the ninth as he retired the side in order with two strikeouts.

Eastern Michigan scored one run in the bottom half of the ninth inning with two outs on a single from Hugo to make it 7-2, which served as the final score as Toledo took the first of three games.

Game Notes
» With the loss, Eastern Michigan fell to 13-16 (8-8 MAC) and Toledo improved to 12-20 (6-10 MAC)
» Graduate student catcher Harrison Travis (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Soddy Daisy/Carson-Newman) turned in a 2-for-4 performance from the plate, marking his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
» Beckner got the start on the mound for the Eagles, his ninth of the season. He struck out eight batters, issued three walks, and allowed just one run (unearned) in 6.2 innings of work. Beckner's zero earned-run performance marked his first of the season and his eight strikeouts tied a season-high with two other occasions (at Central Arkansas, Feb. 22; vs. Ball State, April 4).
» Beckner's eight-strikeout, zero earned run outing is the first of his NCAA Division I career while his strikeout total is the second-highest in his collegiate career as he previously struck out nine without allowing an earned run in a 12-0 shutout of Bluefield State as a member of the Charleston Golden Eagles, March 6, 2022.
» Vance finished the game with three hits, going 3-for-3 with one double and two runs. It is the eighth time this season he's tallied multiple hits, and the fourth in which he's posted three.
» Eastern Michigan out-hit the Rockets 9-8 in the loss. It marks the 17th time this season the Eagles have out-hit their opponent. Overall, the Eagles are 11-6 when out-hitting their foe.
» Eastern pitching combined for 11 strikeouts, marking the sixth time this season it has passed the double-digit mark. Eastern is 2-4 when striking out 10 or more this season.
» Hugo drove in both runs for the Eagles, marking his ninth multi-RBI game of the season and sixth game with two RBI, which ranks second on the team.

Historical Notes
» The game was the 177th all-time meeting between Eastern Michigan and Toledo. EMU leads the all-time series, 101-76 as its home record moved to 23-17 against the Rockets.
» Beckner's consecutive eight-strikeout performances mark the first from the program since current Philadelphia Phillies' prospect Luke Russo fanned eight and 11 in his last two respective starts as an Eagle in the 2023 season.
