The Green and White look to capture their seventh indoor title, and fourth in the last six seasons

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will make the trip to Akron, Ohio this weekend to compete at the 2020 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29 inside the Stile Athletics Field House.

After finishing last season's conference meet in second place with a team score of 91 points, the Eagles look to earn their seventh indoor title in program history. EMU is also aiming for its fourth championship in the last six seasons, after claiming first prize in 2015, 2016, and 2018.

The Eagles have each of the top three seeds in the 60-meter dash. Freshman Hanna Hearn (Laurel, Miss.-Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (Ind.)) earned the top spot after winning the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.46 at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 21, while fellow freshman Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) and senior co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) rank second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) is third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52, while fellow sophomore Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) places fifth with a time of 8.62.

Junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), who earned Second-Team All-MAC honors last season after running a leg of the distance medley relay, is seeded third in the 200-meter dash and fifth in 400-meter dash. Redshirt senior co-captain Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) also featured in that DMR squad, and ranks in the top-four in three different events. She is second in the MAC in the 5,000-meter race, and fourth in both the mile run and the 3,000-meter event. Fellow harrier Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) will also compete in the mile run and 3,000-meter race, while sophomore Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View (N.C. State)) has the third-fastest time in the conference in the 800-meter event.

After winning the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) indoor and outdoor high jump titles, junior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) is currently ranked second in the MAC in her specialty. From there, sophomore Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) is tied for third in the long jump, and is also slated to compete in the high jump. The program's record-holder in the weight throw, junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) holds the No. 3 seed in that event. One year after garnering Second-Team All-MAC accolades in the pentathlon, sophomore Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) returns to the event and will compete with senior co-captain Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill-Montini Catholic) and freshman Daishon Spann (Coral Springs, Fla.-Atlantic Technical Center).

The two-day meet begins Friday, Feb. 28 with the men's heptathlon at 11 a.m., before field events start at 12:30 p.m. and running events get underway at 3:05 p.m. From there, the conference clash will resume Saturday, Feb. 29 when the heptathlon events get underway at 10 a.m., field events begin at 1 p.m., and running events start up at 1:25 p.m. The awards ceremony is expected to take place Saturday at 5 p.m.
