Eagles Hold Second Place Following Opening Day of MAC Indoor Championships

Co-captain Emily Smith finished in third place in the 5,000-meter run

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team concluded the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in second place with a team score of 27 points Friday, Feb. 28 inside Stile Athletics Field House.

Redshirt senior co-captain Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) finished in third place in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:56.44. A pair of Eagles also earned high marks in the field events, as junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 19.37 meters, while sophomore Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters. 

In all, EMU boasted three of the top-six sprinters in the 60-meter prelims. Senior co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) was the runner-up as she crossed the finish line in 7.51 seconds, before freshmen Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) and Hanna Hearn (Laurel, Miss.-Brebeuf Jesuit prep (Ind.)) placed fourth and sixth with times of 7.57 and 7.64, respectively. The Green and White will also send a trio of runners to the 60-meter hurdles final, as sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) was third with a time of 8.53, while fellow sophomore Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) placed fourth at 8.62, and redshirt freshman Brenna Cavanaugh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) finished fifth with a mark of 8.66.

From there, senior Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) claimed fourth place in the 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 24.45, while sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) earned the final two spots in the 400-meter final with marks of 55.88 and 55.89, respectively.

Sophomore Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View (N.C. State)) also qualified for the 800-meter final, finishing second overall in the prelims with a time of 2:11.83. During the indoor pentathlon, freshman Daishon Spann (Coral Springs Fla.-Atlantic Technical Center) won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:19.00 and placed fifth overall with a grand total of 3,479 points, while senior co-captain Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) captured the long jump with a distance of 5.57 meters and finished ninth overall with a 3,417 points.

The MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will resume Saturday, Feb. 29, when the men's heptathlon gets back underway at 10 a.m. Field events will restart at 1 p.m. while running events will commence 1:25 p.m. The awards ceremony is expected to take place at 5 p.m.
