Men's Cross Country Poised to Take on Nuttycombe Invitational

10/12/2017 10:16:00 AM | Men's XC

The meet will include 19 teams ranked within the nation's top-30

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team competes in the Nuttycombe Invitational Friday, Oct. 13, in Madison, Wis. The meet will be the second straight week the Eagles face off against some of the top talent in the nation.

"We are looking forward to testing ourselves in, other than the NCAA National Championships, the most difficult meet in the country," said Head Coach John Goodridge. "We got to shake the rust off at Notre Dame and have the opportunity to get better after this effort and two more weeks of training."

Much like the Notre Dame Invitational the Green and White placed 12th in, the Nuttycombe Invitational hosts many of the top programs in the country. This year, 19 of the top-30 ranked teams in the nation will be competing in the 8k. Of the 19 teams, four are in the top-10, including No. 3 Syracuse, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Southern Utah, and No. 10 Furman. Additionally, four more programs are slotted in the top-15 in the form of No. 11 Colorado State, No. 13 Iona, No. 14 Iowa State, and No. 15 Boise State.

EMU is the lone Mid-American Conference representative, however, the top five teams in the Great Lakes Region will be competing Friday, as Michigan State (No. 1), Indiana (No. 2), Michigan (No. 3), Wisconsin (No. 4), and Purdue (No. 5), will all be present. The Eagles currently rank sixth in the region, the highest of any MAC program.

Last year, Eastern took down five teams ranked in the top-30, finishing 17th with a team score of 421. Former All-American Nick Raymond led the Eagles with a 54th-place finish, while Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), and Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary-Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) all cracked the top-90. Eastern returns all but two of the runners who competed in last year's men's championship division, as Bouchikhi, Andresson, and Matko are back, as well as Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) and Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls).

The event is scheduled to begin 1 p.m. EST on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. Fans will be able to follow along by way of live results and live streaming, both of which are located on the EMU men's cross country schedule page.
