YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team's offensive struggles continued Tuesday night, April 27, at Oestrike Stadium, as the Michigan State University Spartans held EMU to three hits to down the Eagles, 5-1, in the first of back-to-back meetings this week.
The loss drops EMU to 21-20 on the year, while MSU improves to 27-11 with the win.
Junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) provided EMU's only offense of the game, as he finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the loss. Skirving leads the Eagles with six round-trippers this season.
Juniors Aaron Chavez (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone College) and Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) were the only other Eagles to register hits in the loss.
The Spartans put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the third, as an RBI single up the middle by Ryan Jones score one to make it a 1-0 game. The Spartans tallied three more in the inning to put EMU down, 4-0, going into the bottom of the third.
EMU put a run on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Skirving's solo blast over the right field wall made it a 5-1 game.
But the Eagles could not get the offense going any further, as the Spartans escaped Ypsilanti with the win.
EMU and MSU play again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Cooley Law Stadium. The game will be available on Eagle All-Access via EMUEagles.com. Click here to register for the audio-only broadcast.
