LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – For the second time in as many nights, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a game to its instate rivals from Michigan State University, as the Eagles fell, 4-0, to the Spartans Wednesday night, April 28, at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Eagles fall to 21-21 on the year with the loss, while the Spartans improve to 28-11 with the win.

EMU collected just two hits in the loss, as redshirt sophomore Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) and sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) both tallied one hit.

Despite a solid outing in his first start of the season, senior Steve Young (Port Huron, Mich.-Port Huron Northern-Jackson C.C.) took the loss for the Eagles. Young went four and two-thirds innings and gave up five hits and three runs. The EMU bullpen of junior Rob Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark), sophomore Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Ontario Schools), freshman Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) and sophomore Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) pitched well in relief, holding MSU to just one run on three hits.

Over the last five games, the EMU pitching staff has been stellar, combining for a 2.94 ERA in 46 innings. The Eagles have given up only 15 runs during the stretch and have tallied 36 strikeouts and walked just 11 batters, holding opponents to a .219 batting average.

Already holding on to a 3-0 lead, the Spartans extended it to four-runs in the bottom of the seventh, as a towering solo home run by Seth Williams to right-center field put the Eagles behind, 4-0, in the late stages of the game.

The Eagles put a pair of runners on in the top of the ninth, as junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) and senior Todd Graves (St. Marys, Ohio-St. Marys Memorial) both walked to give EMU momentum with two outs. However, it was not to be, as the Spartans managed to keep the Eastern Michigan bats in check to secure the win.

With the loss, the Eagles finish the season 0-3 versus Michigan State and former Head Coach Jake Boss Jr.

After finishing 5-4 versus opponents from the Big Ten conference last year, the Eagles end the year winless versus the Big Ten with three losses to MSU and one to the University of Michigan.

The Eagles jump back into Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they head to Ball State University for a three-game set with the Cardinals, April 30-May 2, at Ball Diamond.
