Eagles pick up first win in Athens since 2000
ATHENS, Ohio – After allowing a game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team regrouped in overtime as Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) headed in Stephanie Janssens’ (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner kick, giving the Eagles a 2-1 win over Ohio University, Sunday, Oct. 26 at Chessa Field.
With the win, the Eagles move to 11-4-4 (6-2-2 MAC) on the year, while Ohio falls to 4-10-3 (3-5-2 MAC). EMU also picked up its first win in Athens since the 2000 campaign.
Freshman Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) put the Eagles on top in the first half, scoring her 11th goal of the season. Detrick found the lower right corner of the goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of the first half. Neither team scored the rest of the half, sending the Eagles to the intermission with the one-goal lead.
Just when it looked like the Eagles were going to escape with a 1-0 victory in regulation, Ohio’s Amy Lower hit from eight yards out, beating keeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea), knotting the game at 1-1 with less than two minutes remaining.
EMU kept its cool in the extra period and continued to attack offensively. The Eagles missed on their first corner kick opportunity of overtime but not on the second. Zundel scored for the fourth time this season off a Janssens’ corner kick, giving the Eagles the thrilling overtime win.
Manville anchored the Eagles in goal, making six saves while allowing only one goal.
The Eagles wrap up regular season play on the road when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on in-state rival Central Michigan. EMU and CMU are slated to play Thursday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. Following that contest, the Eagles will await word on post-season pairings for the MAC Tournament.
