Eagles muster only four hits against USC pitching staff

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was shutout by #2/4 ranked University of South Carolina Gamecocks here Friday afternoon at Sarge Frye Field.

EMU (1-4) had its ace and 2006 Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year Jeff Fischer (0-1) on the mound but could not give him any run support. Fischer only allowed one run over the first five innings before running into trouble in the top of the sixth inning. For the game, Fisher went 5.2 innings with five strikeouts allowing four runs (three earned) on seven scattered hits.

Conversely, the Eagles had no answer for South Carolina (6-1) junior pitcher Harris Honeycutt who picked up the win going seven innings allowing only three scattered hits and one walk with an impressive nine strikeouts.

Juniors Josh Ivan, Jeff Davis and senior Derek Lehrman all went 1-for-4 at the plate while senior Brian Blackburn went 1-for-3 to lead the Eagles offensively.

USC got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single to right field by Cheyne Hurst to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Gamecocks increased its lead in the bottom of sixth inning with a RBI single and double off Fischer to go up 3-0. Sophomore Trevor Hoffman replaced Fischer on the mound with a runner on first. USC’s Travis Jones doubled to right field to drive in another run. With runners on second and third, Trent Kline reached on a EMU throwing error which allowed both runs to score giving the Gamecocks a 6-0 lead and eventual victory.

Due to possible weekend weather conditions, EMU and South Carolina will conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 24 begining at 1:30 p.m.
