Eagles could not regroup after game one heartbreaking loss
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was swept by the #2/4 ranked University of South Carolina Gamecocks, 8-6 and 5-1, in doubleheader action here Saturday afternoon at Sarge Frye Field. EMU (1-6) took a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning of game one only to give up a walk-off grand slam home run with two outs to cap off a six-run frame for USC (8-1).
In game one, EMU was down 1-0 after the first inning but EMU jumped out to a 5-2 to lead after getting two runs in the second and third innings and one run the top of the fifth.
In the ninth, after junior Dan Puls hit the lead-off USC batter, freshman Cory Chaffins came in and got the next batter to foul out to left field. USC’s Trent Kline and Jon Willard then got back-to-back singles to cut Eastern’s lead to 5-3 with runners on first and second base. Cheyne Hurst drew a walk to load the bases and Robbie Grinstaff followed with a RBI on a fielder’s choice to pull South Carolina within one, 5-4. However EMU was able to get the force at second base for the second out with runners on first and third. Justin Smoak drew yet another walk to juice the bases and Phil Disher put the game in ice with a walk-off shot to give the Gamecocks a 8-6 victory.
Senior George Biddle (0-1) turned in an outstanding performance on the mound going 7.2 innings with five strikeouts allowing only two runs on five scattered hits.
Senior Derek Lehrman led the way for EMU going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Junior Jeff Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBI while junior Josh Ivan hit 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
After the game one heartbreaker, the EMU offense was unable to get going in game two as the Eagles only tallied one run on five hits off USC pitcher Mike Cisco who notched five strikeouts in 6.2 inning of work.
Junior Jeff Hehr paced the Eagles going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI while senior Brian Blackburn went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Sophomore Matt Shoemaker (0-1) picked up his first of the season.
EMU hits the road and heads west to face the University of Arizona of the Pacific-10 conference for a weekend series March 2-4.
