Eagles held Blue Demons scoreless before 67th-minute penalty kick

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – After winning two-straight matches, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at DePaul University Sunday, Sept. 7, at Wish Field after the Eagles held the Blue Demons off the scoreboard before a 67th-minute penalty kick.

How It Happened
Junior Aniyah Mack (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills/Austin Peay) recorded Eastern's first on-target attempt of the match, a one-touch strike from 20 yards out that was blocked by DePaul's keeper, who was 16 yards off her line.

The highly-defensive first half saw redshirt junior Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) make a trio of saves.

Physical play from the opening 45 minutes carried into the second half as the teams combined for 30 fouls and five yellow cards in the match.

One of those 30 fouls came against Eastern in the box, resulting in a DePaul penalty kick at the 66:03 mark.

Holland guessed the right way but was unable to make the stop as the Blue Demons scored the match's lone goal.

Eastern's best chance the rest of the way came on a set piece from 22 yards out in the 73rd minute, but the Eagles' shot was blocked by the Blue Demons' five-player wall.

Game Notes
» Eastern dropped to 2-3-0 overall while DePaul is 3-4-0.
» EMU held a narrow 9-8 advantage in shots while DePaul had a 3-2 edge in corners.
» All of EMU's nine shots were taken by different players.
» Senior Meghan Heath (Medina, Ohio/Medina/Canisius) and junior Sarah Van Euwen (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) each played all 90 minutes. Van Euwen has done so in five-straight matches while Heath played the full 90 for the third time this season.

» EMU moves to 9-6-1 all-time in road non-conference games in the state of Illinois, including an 8-4-1 mark since 2006.
