YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fell to visiting Marquette University, 18-14, Friday, April 25, in the regular season finale for both teams on a warm day at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti. Mackenzie Blackwell scored five goals for the Eagles (8-8) while Tess Osburn tallied six for the Golden Eagles (10-6) to spoil EMU's Senior Day.
How It Happened
Eastern came out hot in the opening minutes as it took a 3-0 lead with just over six minutes played. Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) got the scoring started on a pass from Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) before Emerson Henry (Ashburn, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) scored her first, also off a dish from Grollman, who then scored the third goal with 8:49 to play. After an MU goal and Henry netting her second to make it 4-1, the Golden Eagles struck back with five consecutive goals to close the first quarter, turning a 4-1 EMU lead into a 6-4 deficit.
After another MU goal, its sixth in a row, opened the second quarter, the Eagles stemmed the tide with a pair of goals to trim the deficit to 7-6. Henry collected her hat trick off a pass from Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) while a woman-up before Blackwell scored on another assist from Grollman. Despite the surge, the visitors struck again for five consecutive goals to close the half and take a 12-6 lead into intermission.
Following the break and another MU goal, the Eagles responded with a run of four consecutive goals to move back to within three. Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto) scored on a pass from Henry before Blackwell completed her hat trick on the woman-up advantage with an assist from Stella Burke (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Catholic Secondary). Grollman followed with her second goal and Schwab netted her second. The visitors, however, closed the period with three consecutive goals to make it 16-10 for MU at the end of three.
The Golden Eagles opened the fourth quarter with another goal before EMU scored three consecutively. Blackwell scored on the woman-up advantage on a pass from Schwab before Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) tallied her first on a dish from her twin sister. Blackwell scored once again off a Grollman pass with 8:30 to play and EMU within four (17-13). That was all the closer the Eagles could get as MU added one goal with 4:12 to play before Laurelle Weisbrod (Delta, B.C./South Delta Secondary/Jacksonville/Concordia-St. Paul), on her Senior Day, scored her first goal with the Eagles and her first in just over two years on a free-position shot with 22 seconds to play to cap the scoring.
