Senior led the charge as EMU clinched a berth into the MAC Tournament

Highlights

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Tracy Grollman tallied eight points on five goals and three assists and the defense pitched a fourth-quarter shutout to spark the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team to a 16-12 Mid-American Conference victory over the University of Akron on Easter Sunday, April 20, at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (8-7, 4-2 MAC) made Easter Sunday a joyous Eastern Sunday as they came back from deficits three times before using a 5-0 fourth quarter to defeat the Zips (8-7, 3-2 MAC) and clinch a spot in the postseason for the second consecutive season.

How It Happened
Emerson Henry (Ashburn, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) got the scoring started at 13:45 in the first as she was assisted by Roya Khaleeli (Rancho Palo Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) for a 1-0 lead before the visitors tied the score at 1-1. The Eagles scored the next two goals for a 3-1 lead as Khaleeli was assisted by Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) before Amber Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) scored on a pass from Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School). After UA pulled on back to make it 3-2, the Eagles scored twice more to close out the first with a 5-2 lead. Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) was assisted on her goal by Henry before Henry netted her second on the woman-up advantage off a pass from Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto).

The visitors struck back in the second as the Zips scored five consecutive goals to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 7-5 lead. Grollman scored on a free-position shot to halt the run before Akron added another with 50 seconds to play. Grollman, this time assisted by Am. Alderman, scored with five seconds to play before the break to send the game to halftime with EMU trailing, 8-7.

Following intermission, Grollman continued to show her hot hand as she bagged two more goals to put EMU in front, 9-8. The two teams would go on to trade goals back and forth to close out the quarter with the Zips on top, 12-11. Henry, off an assist from Katheryn Wilson (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek), and Payton Bloedow (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake/Stony Brook) scored the goals for the Eagles to keep the score close heading into the fourth.

In the final stanza, it was all Eastern as the Eagles would score five goals while blanking the Zips to take the game, 16-12. Schwab scored her first to tie the game at 12-12 with 12:16 to play before Grollman scored her fifth and secured the game-winning goal for the second time this year to make it 13-12. Ab. Alderman scored on a free-position shot before Henry grabbed her career-high fourth goal before Ab. Alderman closed the scoring with 3:04 to play as Grollman assisted on the final two goals.

Individual Notes
» Tracy Grollman led the way with team highs in goals (five), assists (three), and points (eight), setting career-highs in both goals and points. One game removed from scoring six points at Kent State (April 13), Grollman posted eight to tie for the fourth-highest single-game total in program history and third-best in a MAC game with Katheryn Wilson, who tallied eight points against Youngstown State, March 23.
» The five goals for Tracy Grollman bettered her previous career high of four goals scored over two years ago, April 19, 2023, at Robert Morris. Grollman's fifth and final goal, which game at 11:10 remaining in the fourth, gave the Eagles a 13-12 lead, a lead they would not relinquish, while standing at the second game-winning goal of Grollman's career and her second this year after scoring the winner against Detroit Mercy, April 6.
» With Eastern trailing, 7-5, Tracy Grollman scored her first of five goals, which also started a stretch of four consecutive goals scored by Grollman. The streak tied for the longest in program history and marked the second time in her career she scored four in a row with the first instance coming at Robert Morris, April 19, 2023.
» Emerson Henry finished the game with five points on four goals and one assist while adding five draw controls. The five points and four goals are career highs after she recorded four points against Oregon (April 11) and three goals against Canisius (March 1). Along with her second career hat trick, Henry brought her season total to 85 draw controls to break the EMU freshman record 83 recorded by Mackenzie Blackwell in 2023. Henry, who ranks second on the single-season list, is nine away from tying Blackwell's single-season mark of 94 recorded last year.
» Defensively, Annika Wozney (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) had another solid day as she recorded five caused turnovers and three ground balls. The five caused turnovers bettered her previous career high of four recorded earlier this year against Canisius (March 1) and tied for the single-game record at EMU with Sydney Lawrence, who accomplished the feat twice.
» Maddie Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) recorded nine saves and three ground balls for the Eagles. She now has 64 ground balls on the season, which broke her own school record of 63 set last year. Additionally, she became the first EMU goalkeeper to make 150+ stops in a single season.

Team Notes
» Eastern improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in MAC play while Akron fell to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in league action.
» The Eagles broke the single-season record for wins with their eighth, one more than the 2024 squad, who finished 7-9. The four wins in MAC play tied the single-season record set last year with an identical 4-2 mark.
» The win for the Eagles clinched a berth in the 2025 MAC Tournament, May 1 and 3, at a site to be determined. The results of next week's games, including Robert Morris (4-1) at Akron (3-2) and Central Michigan (3-2) at Detroit Mercy (2-3), will determine the conference champion or champions and which team will play host to the tournament.
» The result against Akron improved EMU's record to 2-1 all-time and marked the first time in series history the home team won. The game also marked the first time in the series the game was decided by more than one goal (Akron won, 10-9, in Ypsilanti in 2023 and EMU won, 11-10, in Akron last year).
» The 16 goals scored tied for the fourth-highest total in a MAC game (tied for sixth overall) for the Eagles and marked the fifth time this year the team has scored 15+ goals in a game.
» Two of the goals scored today were major milestones for the program. The Emerson Henry goal at 5:17 in the fourth quarter stands as the 500th in program history while the Tracy Grollman free-position goal at 4:17 in the second marked the 200th goal in a MAC game for EMU.
» The Eagles dished out a season-high 10 assists, tying for the second-highest total in a single game in program history while tying for the most in a MAC contest. Overall, the 11 EMU recorded at Delaware State, Feb. 28, 2024, stands as the single-game record while the 10 tallied against Detroit Mercy, April 29, 2023, was the record against a MAC foe.
» The 26 points recorded ranked as the third-most in a single game in program history while standing second in a MAC game.
» The 13 caused turnovers ranked as the sixth-highest total in a single game at EMU while ranking fourth against a MAC foe.
