YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game weekend set against the University of Toledo Rockets, 6-2, at Oestrike Stadium, Sunday, April 13.
Eastern Michigan fell to 14-17 (9-9 MAC), while Toledo improved to 13-21 (7-11 MAC). The Eagles had six hits as a team and two RBI. Toledo posted 12 hits and six RBI.
On offense, Eastern was led by Drew Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush/Ohio State) and Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio/Mohawk), with each having two hits, including one double from Vance.
The winning pitcher was Toledo's Brady Sasse (1-3), while Tyler Kapa (Waterford, Mich./Kettering/Alma/Mott C.C./Davenport) (2-4) was tagged with the loss.
How it Happened
The game was scoreless in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Toledo knocked an RBI single to take the lead 2-0. Eastern got on the board the ensuing half inning, with John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.) singling to drive in Jones, before Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) sent Vance home to even the score at two runs apiece.
Toledo added two runs in the top of the fourth, with the first coming off an RBI triple. Drew Norris (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley/Utah/Johnson C.C.) relieved Kapa with one out in the inning. The Rockets scored one more run on a sacrifice fly to give themselves a two-run cushion.
In the fifth inning, Toledo added one more run to its total to take a 5-2 lead on an RBI single. In the top of the seventh, Fischer Hendershot (Flushing, Mich./Flint Powers) relieved Norris. Toledo then added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to four, 6-2. Ethan Davis (Brownstown, Ind./Brownstown Central/Marian/Frontier C.C.) relieved Hendershot and allowed no runs while striking out four and pitching 2.1 scoreless innings to finish the game for the Eagles.
The score would remain 6-2 as Eastern Michigan was shut out the last six innings and dropped the weekend series, two games to one.
Game Notes
» Vance was 2-for-3 on the day to collect his third consecutive game with multiple hits and his tenth of the season.
» Norris threw a season-high three innings for the Eagles.
» Jones contributed on offense with two hits. It was his second multi-hit game of the season, also doing so at Akron, March 9.
» Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) reached base safely three times, including a hit and two walks. It's the second consecutive game he's reached more than twice.
» Davis threw 2.1 innings and allowed no runs. It's the ninth time this season that he pitched a scoreless outing. Davis also had four strikeouts, marking an NCAA Division I career-high.
» Hale and Hugo each drove in one run. Hale has 22 RBI on the season, and Hugo furthered his season-long career-high to 34 RBI.

» The game was the 179th all-time meeting between Eastern Michigan and Toledo. EMU leads the all-time series, 102-77.
