HUTCHINSON, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite rainy conditions and a long weather delay, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished second against a strong field of teams at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate presented by PDI at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., Oct. 6-7. The tournament, which saw teams sit through a nearly five-hour weather delay on the first day of play, was shortened to 36 holes.
In the team race, Eastern (298-282) and Kansas State University (290-290) tied for runner-up honors at 20-over 580 while No. 14 University of Florida (287-286) win the event in 13-over 573. The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the latest Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll, finished ahead of two ranked teams, including No. 25 Baylor University (289-295), who was fourth at 24-over 584, and No. 12 Oklahoma State University (295-291), who was fifth at 26-over 586.
Eastern saw three of its players finish in the top four with Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson) leading the way at 3-over 143 (71-72) to tie for second. Sukterm, who played at Barton Community College in Kansas her freshman year (2023-24), played in her 10th career 36-hole collegiate tournament and placed in the top two for the 10th time after winning six times and taking second three times with BCC. Additionally, the 143 strokes she recorded tied for the third-lowest 36-hole score in program history.
Both Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) and Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) tied for fourth as both shot 4-over 144, which tied for the fifth-lowest two-round score in program history. Vega, who recorded her first career top five finish, was tied for 39th after the first round (77) before she shot 67 in the second round to vault herself up 35 positions. The 67 she fired not only tied for the third-lowest round in program history but also tied for the best score of the day in the tournament and was one of only three scores that broke par in the round.
Matilde Zocchi (Turin, Italy/Liceo Vittoria) tied for 25th at 9-over 149 (77-72), a score that also tied for the 25th-best in program history. Ahead of the tournament, only 28 scores of 149 or lower had been recorded in 36-hole tournaments in program history with the Eagles adding four to the ledger with their play this week. Janae Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) rounded out the Eagles in the field as she shot 10-over 150 (77-73) to finish tied for 29th.
Team Notes
» Three teams in the tournament were ranked in the top 25 of the latest Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll with the Eagles, who were outside the top 25 and on the receiving votes list, defeating two of those squads in No. 25 Baylor, who finished fourth, and No. 12 Oklahoma State, who was fifth. EMU also finished ahead of host Oklahoma, who also was receiving votes. No. 14 Florida won the title.
» The 580 strokes stand as a program record for 36-hole tournaments. The record of 585 was recorded twice previously, including the Low Country Invitational, March 2-3, 2020, and the Lady Jaguar Invitational, April 16-17, 2022.
» The team's 580 strokes marked only the sixth time in program history the Eagles have broken 600 in a 36-hole event.
» The tournament was originally slated for 54 holes, but inclement weather forced the change to 36 holes. The teams began play Monday but had to wait out a storm cell for nearly five hours (4:45) before resuming play. Several teams did not finish the first round before darkness set it in Monday, pushing the final few holes and all of round two to Tuesday.
Individual Notes
» Throughout program history and when playing in a 36-hole event, only 28 individual scores recorded by an EMU player were 149 or less. At the Oklahoma Intercollegiate, four Eagles added their names to the list, including Baiyok Sukterm (143, tied for third), Jasmine Leovao (144, tied for fifth), Mariana Vega (144, tied for fifth), and Matilde Zocchi (149, tied for 25th).
» Baiyok Sukterm, who tied with Stephany Fleet for the third-lowest 36-hole score in program history, is no stranger to 36-hole events. In her freshman season with Barton Community College, she competed in 36-hole tournaments nine times and placed either first (six times) or second (three times) in those events. With her finish in Kansas, she placed first or second in all 10, 36-hole tournaments she has played.
» Mariana Vega was one of the biggest climbers in the standings in the second round. After an opening-round 77 had her tied for 39th, Vega shot 67 in the second round to climb 35 places and finished tied for fourth. Additionally, her 3-under 67 tied for the lowest score recorded in the second round among all players and made her one of only three players to break par in the round.
» Mariana Vega's second-round 67 is a career-best and tied for the third-lowest round in program history. Additionally, she is the third Eagle to shoot a round of 67 this season after Erina Tan (Belmont, Western Australia/Mount Lawley Senior) accomplished the feat at The Southern and Savannah de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) followed suit at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.
» Matilde Zocchi posted the second-best finish of her career by tying for 25th. Her best showing was a tie for 20th at the season-opening The Southern.
