The Eagles and Bruins will play a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m. CT with the second game starting roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team rallied in the ninth inning, but fell short, 3-2, to the Belmont University Bruins today, Saturday, Feb. 17, inside E.S. Rose Park. The Eagles shifted to 0-2 (0-0 MAC) on the season while Belmont improved to 2-0 (0-0 MVC).
How it Happened
After Belmont struck first in the second and added a run in the third, the score remained unchanged until the fifth when Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) crushed a ball to center field, scoring Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater/Spring Arbor) to put the Eagles on the board.
Drew Beckner (Westerville, Ohio/Big Walnut/Charleston) was relieved after six innings of work, where he sent eight Bruins packing and permitted just one hit.
Belmont tacked on one run in the seventh, coming off a single to center field, scoring a Bruin from second base.
With the Eagles down two in the ninth, Giano Zuccaro (Middleburgheights, Ohio/Berea Midpark/Charleston) stepped up, singling to center, scoring Cole Wilcox (Shiocton, Wisc./Shiocton/Lake County) from second base.
Despite the rally, Eastern fell short to Belmont, 3-2.
Game Notes
» Hugo secured the first extra-base hit of the season with a double down the left field line in the top of the third inning.
» Freshman Nathan Ball (Bay City, Mich./Bay City John Glenn) saw action for the first time in his collegiate career today. Ball is the only freshman to play so far this season. Joining Ball in their Eastern debuts were Andrew Dukesherer (Byron Center, Mich. Grandville Muskegon C.C.), Aidan Arbogast (Livonia, Mich. Stevenson / Mid-Michigan Kellogg C.C.), and Beckner.
» Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif./University Prep/Crown College) stole the Eagles' first base of the season when he swiped second base during Ball's at-bat in the top of the fourth inning. The act marked the graduate student's sixth stolen base of his Eastern tenure.
» Beckner had a day on the mound. The first-year Eagle tied a career-long outing as he went six innings on the hill. The junior allowed just one hit through six innings for the second time in his career, also doing so during his freshman season at the University of Charleston (W. Va.), March 6, 2022, in just the third appearance of his career. Moreover, Beckner fanned eight Bruins today, the most from an EMU pitcher this season and one shy of tying his career-best.
» Zuccaro secured the first hit of his Eastern career, tapping a clean bunt to the third base side in the top of the seventh. Zuccaro stepped up in the ninth, singling to center, and scoring Wilcox. The base hit marked his first multi-hit day as an Eagle, as well as his first RBI. Additionally, Zuccaro is the first Eagle this season to notch an RBI in consecutive games.
» Eastern's pitchers shut the door when in two-out scenarios on the mound, limiting the Bruins to a .200 batting average.
» Eagle baserunners were active today, stealing a season-high three bases. Factoring in yesterday's games, three stolen bases are tied for the second-most from a MAC team in a single game this season, as Akron stole four in its win over Illinois, Feb. 16, while Central Michigan stole three in its 9-4 triumph over Stephen F. Austin, Feb. 16.
Historical Notes
» Today's contest marked the fifth all-time between the Eagles and Bruins. With the result, the series shifted, 4-1, in favor of Belmont.
