Women's Track and Field Ready for Split-Squad Weekend

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team continues its indoor season at the GVSU Big Meet Friday, Feb. 14 inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. The Eagles will also send three runners to the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt University Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Vanderbilt Student Rec Center.

The Eagles will compete in Allendale, Mich. for the second time this season after starting the 2019-20 campaign at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 6, 2019, while returning to Vandy for the first time since taking part in the Black & Gold Invitational, March 22-23, 2019.

Eastern makes its return to the GVSU Big Meet after finishing in first place with a team score of 80 points, Feb. 9, 2018. Current senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) was one of five Eagles to earn an individual title, as she captured the 400-meter dash and tied her then-personal best time with a mark of 54.92 seconds. 

The Green and White notched seven top-10 finishes last weekend at the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame, Feb. 7-8. Sophomore Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View (N.C. State)) finished in fourth place in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:10.92. The Eagles also shined in the distance events, as redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) ranked seventh in the mile with a time of 4:53.51, redshirt junior Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) was eighth in the 3,000-meter race with a mark of 9:55.45, and graduate student Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Warren Mott (Wayne State University)) paced the Eagles in the 5,000-meter run, finishing eighth overall with a time of 17:37.1. 

Freshman Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) won her heat of the 60-meter hurdles semifinals and clinched a berth in the final race, where she finished seventh overall with a time of 8.60 seconds. From there, senior co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) recorded the fifth-fastest time in 60-meter dash semifinals, and went on to finish eighth in the title race with a mark of 7.63 seconds.

The Eagles wrapped up the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, as the quartet of sophomore Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), junior Abbey Zastrow (Arcadia, Wis.-Arcadia (University of Mary)), and junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) recorded a time of 3:45.72. 

Running events at the GVSU Big Meet get underway Friday at 10 a.m. while field events are set to begin at 12 p.m. As for the Music City Challenge, running events will start up Saturday at 10 a.m., while field events will commence at 11 a.m.
