YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After traveling to the west coast last week, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team heads to the Tennessee Relays, April 6-8, down in Knoxville, Tenn. This marks the 50th time that the event, which features some very tough teams, has taken place.
The Tennessee Relays can be followed with live results, as well as a stream through the WatchESPN app. The stream will take place from 3 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7, and 12p.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 8. Last week, Eastern sent a small group of distance runners to the Stanford Invitational, March 31. There, redshirt juniors Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge) and Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) had particularly strong days. Andresson finished the 5000m run with a time of 14:00.83, which was a career-best and the seventh-best outdoor 5000m mark in program history. Additionally, it also broke the Icelandic outdoor 5000m record, earning him Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week honors.
Bouchikhi, who also ran in the 5000m, clocked in with a time of 14:06.12, which was both a career-best and the 10th-best time in the EMU record books. Finally, redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) ran in the 10000m invite, securing 11th-place in 29:18.55.
The list of teams competing at the Tennessee Relays includes No. 14 Tennessee, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 18 Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Illinois, Rutgers, Ohio State, Southern Illinois, Middle Tennessee, and Eastern Michigan.
The meet is scheduled to begin Thursday, April 6, at 10 a.m. with the women's heptathlon, followed shortly by the men's decathlon at 10:30 a.m. Action resumes on Friday, April 7, with the second half of the men's decathlon at 10 a.m. The majority of the events will begin later in the afternoon, starting with the women's 400m hurdles at 2:45 p.m. and the women's long jump at 3 p.m. The meet concludes on Saturday, April 8, beginning with the women's discus throw at 10 a.m. For more information on the Tennessee Relays, please click here.
