Eagles Defeat Wayne State in Midweek Contest

3/25/2015 10:01:00 PM | Baseball

EMU stole a single game record 11 bases against the Warriors

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team broke the EMU single game stolen base record with 11 swipes in a 10-6 victory over the Wayne State University Warriors at Oestrike Stadium Wednesday afternoon, March 25.  The previous record was 10 against Boston College during the 1986 season.  The win improves the Eagles' record to 8-14 overall while the Warriors drop to 7-10 on the season.

Eastern Michigan scored 10 runs on 11 hits, led by a three-hit performance from John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra). The sophomore drove in a pair runs in the contest as well. Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) and Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) each record two base knocks in the game, while Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) and Adam Dennison (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) chipped in with two RBI in the midweek affair for the Eagles. The Warriors had seven hits in the game, led by Bradley Baldwin's two hits.  Ryan Mergener had a team-high two RBI in pinch hit duties for Wayne State.

Freshman Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) got the start for the Green and White, pitching 3.1 innings giving up two earned runs on four hits while striking out two.  Devon Bronson (Southgate, Mich.-Anderson), Austin Wilson, and Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) each recorded scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Head Coach Mark Van Amedye.  Jake Davis was saddled with the loss for the Warriors after pitching the first inning, giving up two runs in the opening frame.

The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, grabbing a 2-0 lead over the Warriors.  Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) led off the game for the Eagles with a base on balls on moved up to second on his first stolen base of the game.  Another walk to Peterson put runners on first and third for the Green and White.  McGeein's RBI ground out brought in Williams for the Eagles' first run of the contest.  Montgomery singled in the ensuing at bat to bring in Peterson to extend to the Eagles' lead out to 2-0.

EMU extended its lead out to 7-0 in the second inning, using five hits.  A bunt single and stolen base from Wilson got things rolling in the inning for the Green and White.  Following a sacrifice bunt from David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington), Williams was hit by a pitch and ended up stealing his second bag of the contest to put runners on second and third with one out.  John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) brought in Wilson with a run scoring ground out, and an RBI double from Peterson scored Williams.  Three straight hits from McGeein, Montgomery, and Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) scored three more runs for the Eagles to make the score 7-0.

Wayne State responded with three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit down to four, 7-3.   EMU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth, on a two-run single from Dennison to push its lead back out to 9-3.

Three-straight runs from the Warriors in the sixth and seventh innings made it a three-run contest heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.  Lett's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh brought in Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) who walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch.  The Eagles held on for the final two innings to preserve the four-run victory.

Eastern Michigan returns to Mid-American Conference action this weekend as the Eagles travel to Kent State University for a three-game set against the Golden Flashes.  The series gets underway Friday, March 27, with first pitch bumped up to 2 p.m.
