Men’s Track and Field Sets Sights on Spartan Invitational

Eagles will look to improve on four first-place finishes at last year’s meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After lifting the lid on the outdoor campaign in Toledo, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will head west to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in the Spartan Invitational, April 5-6. The meet will take place at Ralph Young Field on the campus of Michigan State University.
“We had several encouraging season opening results at Toledo and will compete a few more athletes this weekend at Michigan State as we continue to transition and prepare for this outdoor season,” commented EMU Head Coach John Goodridge.
With Coach Goodridge mentioning that there will be more athletes competing for the Green and White this weekend, we could see the outdoor debuts of Mid-American Conference MVP Terefe Ejigu and MAC Most Outstanding Performer Grzegorz Kalinowski as both distance stars sat out the season opener last week.
EMU opened up the outdoor season, March 30, with an impressive showing at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge where the Green and White 31 top-10 finishes, led by Nick Petro's victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Petro ran away from the competition, crossing the finish line in 6:10.46, 14 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor which happened to be teammate Cody Chabola, who finished with a time of 6:24.54. University of Miami transfer Darrell Butler contributed with a pair of top-five finishes, taking the runner-up slot in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.40 and placing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. Also, Chris Scott finished second in the 200-meter dash after a 21.78 to along with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash.
The Eagles earned four victories at last year's meet, April 6-7, 2012. Cameron Bolton took the top-spot in the 200-meter dash with a 21.71 finish, while Jay Saunders came in second with a 21.82. Bolton was not finished after the 200-meter as he took second in the 400-meter dash in 48.04, finishing just five-hundredths of a second behind the first place finisher. Terefe Ejigu placed first in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:52.22 and Austin Hendrix came in third with a 1:53.55 finish. Levi Selvig and Fontaine Holland were each able to take top-spots in a hurdles race as Selvig won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.82, while Holland took the 400-meter hurdles in 53.96. Selvig also came in fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a 55.87 finish. Petro took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:16.85.
