Clerveaux, Jacobson and Newman to represent women's track and field
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Three members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will travel to the University of Notre Dame to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational, March 1-2.
Senior team co-captain Tatijana Jacobson along with freshman Alysha Newman and Vanessa Clerveaux will represent EMU at this weekend's invitational, hoping to secure spots in the NCAA Championships, March 8-9, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Jacobson will compete in the high jump at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1. Clerveaux will begin her competition in the 60-meter hurdles at 11 a.m. while Newman will participate in the pole vault at 12 p.m., March 2.
"This is a chance for our athletes to improve their marks in hopes of making it to the NCAA Championships," mentioned EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. "We are hopeful that all three will have a great chance at qualifying."
The top 16 athletes in each event qualify for the the NCAA National Championships. Currently, according to the Track and Field Results Report System by the United States Track and Field Coach Association, Jacobson and Newman are in the field. Jacobson's leap of six-feet in the high jump at the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7, has her ranked 13th in the nation. Newman, coming off an individual MAC Championship in the pole vault, where she posted an EMU record 13-feet 10.50-inches mark, sits in the No. 12 spot, nationally. Both hope to improve these marks to ensure their place at nationals.
Clerveaux's time of 8.30 in the 60-meter hurdles at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 16, ranks as the 27th best nationally. The Alex Wilson Invitational will be the last chance for the freshman MAC champion to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
EMU Assistant Coach Jerel Langley chats with Eagle All-Access about the team's runner-up finish at the MAC Championship as well as looking ahead to this weekend's final opportunity to qualify for the national championships. Check out this week's edition of Women's Track and Field Weekly above!
