YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Another pitcher's duel resulted in another win for Northern Illinois University, as the Huskies nipped the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, 2-1, in the finale of a three-game Mid-American Conference West Division series at Oestrike Stadium Sunday, May 8.

NIU's Tony Manville allowed just three hits while striking out four and walking three over 8.1 innings pitched for his seventh victory of the year. Kyle Glancy closed the game to claim his 10th save of the season. EMU starter Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) took the loss to drop his record to 6-4, going 4.1 innings and allowing both of the Huskies runs. The duo of Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) and Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-Florida State College) combined to hold the visitors from DeKalb, Ill. to four hits over the final five frames.

With the loss Eastern Michigan drops to 31-17 overall, 13-8 in the MAC, while Northern Illinois improves to 24-22 (12-9 MAC). Also, the setback drops the Eagles into a tie for second place in the MAC West Division with the University of Toledo.

The only hits of the game for the Green and White came off the bats of Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley), Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.). It equalled the lowest offensive output of the year for the Green and White, who churned out only 14 hits all weekend. Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) scored the lone run for EMU, coming home on a wild pitch off in the sixth inning after reaching base via a walk.

Shortstop Alex Jones keyed the Huskie attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, Joe Etcheverry and Troy White also added two hits apiece.

Much like Friday's opener, the Cardinal and Black got on the board in the first inning to take the early 1-0 edge. Jamison Wells started it off by singling to third base and then stealing. Cory Krupp reached on a fielding error that went off Chaffin's glove and Jones walked to load the bases.

Chaffins then forced Etcheverry to popup, but White followed with a single to center field on the nith pitch of the at-bat for score Wells for the first tally on the scoreboard. With the sacks still jammed, EMU would get back-to-back strikeout to escape the threat.

EMU tried to answer in the bottom of the first, as Leonard continued his hot streak with a hit in 12 of his last 13 games played. With Leonard then on third, Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) hit a sky-high popup on the infield that was missed judged and dropped safely on the infield. Unfortunately, the ball had so much top-spin it rolled foul. On the very next pitch, Manville blew a fastball past the Grandville, Mich. native to end the inning.

Neither side would score again until the fifth, Jones singled to center field and then stole second. Etcheverry roped a doubled down the right field line to plate what turned out to be the winning run. Weber came on the relief of Chaffins and managed to shut down the Huskies' bats the rest of the way.

EMU would get its only run of the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning, as EMU left six runner on base.

Eastern Michigan hits the road for a critical Mid-American Conference series versus Toledo Rockets, May 13-15, at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio. Friday's game time is schedule for 3 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. starts on both Saturday and Sunday.
