Corey Chaffins moves to third all-time on EMU strikeout list

Box Score.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
A hard-hitting slugfest was not enough to brighten a cold, rainy afternoon at Oestrike Stadium as the University of Akron Zips outlasted the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, 14-7, Saturday, April 16. Amidst the offensive battle, starting pitcher Corey Chaffins tallied seven strikeouts over five and two-thirds innings of work to vault past Anthony Tomey for third all-time on the EMU strikeout list.

After falling into a 2-0 hole early, the Eagles put up seven runs in the first three innings to take a 7-5 lead. Chaffins was able to hold the suddenly-ominous Akron bats at bay until the sixth inning, when the Zips cut the lead to 7-6. Drew Turocy promptly tied the score at seven with a leadoff homerun off of lefty Colin Taylor in the seventh inning.

Akron took the lead for good in the eighth inning, as a wild pitch from Tim Combs (1-1) brought Dan Burant across home plate.

Despite manufacturing 14 hits, the Eagles (19-15; 5-6 MAC) were unable to capitalize on all five walks given up by the Akron (8-25; 2-9) pitching staff and stranded a total of 12 baserunners. The Eagles have now lost five straight MAC contests and five of their last six games overall.

As did all four EMU pitchers, Chaffins labored through much of his start Saturday, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four walks and seven punch-outs. The senior hurler ended the day with a no-decision while Combs was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, over one and two-thirds innings.

Benjamin Danzinger (1-0) earned the win for the Zips, pitching five scoreless innings in relief of starter Alex Loftin, who lasted just two innings while allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. Closer Chris Bassitt pitched two shutout innings for his sixth save of the season.

Offensively, right fielder Ken Battiston turned-in another solid offensive performance for Eastern Michigan, going 3-for-6 with a triple to lead off the game and one RBI. Battiston is now 6-for-11 after two games versus the Zips.

After pitching in Friday's contest, Robert Wendzicki returned to the EMU batting order and went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a walk. Zack Leonard also hit 3-for-5 while Ben Magsig went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Akron was led at the dish by Drew Turocy, who posted a 3-for-4 performance with four RBI and three runs scored. Third baseman Sam Trecaso again gave EMU pitchers trouble Saturday, going 3-for-5 with a homerun, a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Jared Turocy had a 2-for-4 outing with a homer.

The Eagles and Zips each had eight separate players with at least one hit in the game.

Battiston got the EMU offense rolling in the first inning with his team-leading fifth triple up the right field power alley. Wendzicki singled up the middle and Tucker Rubino hit a blooper to right field to knot the score, 2-2, after one inning.

EMU bats continued to churn out hits in the second, as a double from Magsig and singles from Battiston, Brent Ohrman and Daniel Russell translated into three runs on four hits and a 5-2 lead.

Akron responded in the top of the third with three runs of their own. After Jared Turocy and Tyler Begun each recorded outs to begin the inning, Chaffins was touched-up for four straight singles and a walk before striking out James Sheltrown.

A pair of leadoff walks from Loftin in the bottom of the third put Rubino and Longo aboard with nobody out. Both runners would come around to score as Rubino slid into home safely thanks to an Akron throwing error. Longo crossed home on a Battiston single through the left side to regain the lead, 7-5.

The score remaind the same until the sixth, when the Zips once again tied the score with a pair of leadoff bombs in both the sixth and seventh inning from Trecaso and Turocy, respectively.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Magsig slapped his second hit of the afternoon down the right field line for his fourth double of the season. The scoring threat was ended, however, when Danzinger retired the next two batters.

After Akron added another three runs in the eight to take a 10-7 lead, Wendzicki used a nine-pitch at bat to hit a single up the right side off of Bassitt. Leonard followed with a nine-pitch at bat of his own, but struck out on a sinking changeup to end the inning.

The game ended with 21 total runs scored and 32 combined hits.

Eastern Michigan will look to salvage the final game of the series Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Steve Weber (3-3) is scheduled to take the hill for the Eagles, with Miles McVeigh (0-5) getting the nod for Akron.
