SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: San Jose State University is a member of the Western Athletic Conference and enters its match with the Eagles sporting a 2-5 overall record. The Spartans are coming off a weekend split where they fell to San Diego State, 2-1, before trumping UC-Riverside by a 3-1 score. SJSU's Kelsey Lord has emerged as the team's leading scorer, posting three goals thus far this season. Goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald has made all seven starts for the Spartans, making 29 saves and allowing 11 goals with one shutout. SJSU is 0-4 away from home. Their meeting with the Eagles will be their first neutral site match this season.
A LOOK AT THE WOLF PACK: The University of Nevada is also a member of the Western Athletic Conference until 2011 when it moves to the Mountain West Conference. The Wolf Pack enter the week with a 3-3-1 mark and a two-game winning streak after sweeping a recent trip to California. Nevada used a late goal in each match to defeat Sacramento State, 4-3, Sept. 10, and San Francisco, 1-0, Sept. 12, in its previous two outings. The Wolf Pack have outscored their opponents, 12-11, this season led by Cristen Drummond's three goals on 22 shots. Dana Moreno and Marie Cove have split time in goal this season, combining for 43 saves and a .796 save percentage. Nevada is 1-1 at home so far this year.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles split their two non-conference road matches last weekend by defeating Valparaiso in double-overtime, 3-2, Friday, Sept. 10, before falling to Northwestern, 3-1, Sunday, Sept. 12. Paige Sheridan was the hero Friday night, scoring her first goal of the season and leading the Eagles to victory over the Crusaders. Also adding goals were Chelsea Detrick and Maggie Christensen. On Sunday, she tallied the lone goal for EMU by tying the game prior to halftime. Northwestern then went on to score two goals in the second half to claim the win.
TURNING THE PAIGE: EMU senior striker Paige Sheridan found the net in consecutive games last weekend, Sept. 10-12. The native of Farmington Hills, Mich. was credited with the game-winning goal in double-overtime at Valparaiso last Friday and then scored again in the team's next match against Northwestern. It was Sheridan's first two goals of the season and put her into double digits for her career with 10 goals.
THE FINAL TEST: The Eagles will face their final two regular season opponents outside of the Mid-American Conference this week by taking on San Jose State University and the University of Nevada-Reno, both first-time opponents for EMU. This will be the first trip out west for the Eagles since 2007 when they took on UC-Irvine and UC-Riverside.
ABBREVIATED SUCCESS: Against opposing non-conference schools that have four or more letters in its abbreviation, the Eagles are 14-3-2 all-time. All three losses have come at home and two of those losses are against IUPUI including the most recent, which was a stunning come-from-behind, 2-1, double-overtime victory over the Eagles at Scicluna Field Sept. 18, 2009. EMU will test its unblemished mark against San Jose State University (SJSU) Thursday, Sept. 16, in Reno, Nev. at the Wolf Pack Invitational.
