AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Junior right handed pitcher Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) pitched his third complete game of the season Friday afternoon, April 16, to lead the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a 6-3 victory over the University of Akron Zips at Lee Jackson Field.
Chaffins went all nine innings, giving up just three runs on seven hits and one walk, while fanning nine Zips, to earn the win and improve his record to 3-3 this season. The complete game marks Chaffins' third of the season, his first resulting in a victory.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 16-18 overall and 6-4 in Mid-American Conference play. The loss drops Akron to 15-17 (2-8 MAC).
Junior right fielder Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.) finished 3-for-5 at the plate in the leadoff spot, scoring one run and driving in one run in the win.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) and senior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) both homered for EMU in the win. The round-tripper marks the third of the season for Magsig and the fifth of the year for Marshall.
Holding on to a 3-0 leading heading into the top of the fifth, the Eagles put up two more on the board to take a five-run lead, as a leadoff triple by freshman Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) led to an RBI single by Kinder to help EMU take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles tallied one more run in the inning on a Zips error to make it a 5-0 lead.
The Zips scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth, including a Samuel Trecaso triple, to make it a 5-3 game.
After the Eagles tallied one run in the top of the ninth to take a three-run lead, Chaffins retired the middle part of Akron's lineup in order to earn the win and help EMU take game one of the three-game set.
The two teams are scheduled to play again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
