MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its final game of a four-game series versus the West Virginia University Mountaineers Sunday afternoon, March 21, as the Eagles fell, 13-6, at Hawley Field.

The Eagles fall to 6-13 with the loss, while the Mountaineers improve to 10-10 with the win.

Redshirt sophomore infielder Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) had another impressive day at the plate, as he finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI in the loss. In the last two games against WVU, Magsig went 7-for-11 at the plate with four runs scored and seven RBI.

The Eagles got on the board early, as junior infielder Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) grounded out and scored Magsig, who singled earlier in the inning, to give EMU a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first.  But the Mountaineers tied it in the bottom half of the inning, as Jedd Gyorko scored on an EMU throwing error to make it a 1-1 game.

Magsig helped the Eagles take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, as his two-out RBI single to center field plated teammate Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.), who reached on a WVU earlier in the inning. But West Virginia again answered the EMU offense in the bottom half of the inning, as RBI singles by Gyorko Kevin Griffin and a two-run double by Grant Buckner put the Eagles down, 5-2. WVU tacked on one more in the bottom of the third to make it a 6-2 game.

Senior Todd Graves (St. Marys, Ohio-St. Marys Memorial) helped pull the Eagle within two runs in the top of the fourth, as his two-run single down the left field line plated Magsig and Kinder to make it a 6-4 game.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth to take a three-run advantage, the Mountaineers took their biggest lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh, as six runs on six hits, including a Gyorko grand slam, and an EMU error put West Virginia ahead, 13-4.

Sophomore Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) limited the deficit in the top of the eighth, as his two-run home run over the wall in center field made it a 13-6 game.

But the Mountaineers managed to keep the Eagles' bats at bay for the remainder of the contest to take three out of four games this weekend at Hawley Field.

EMU is back in action Tuesday, March 23, when it takes on Wayne State University. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at WSU Field in Detroit, Mich.
