YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- For the sixth time in nine years, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team will host a Mid-American Conference Tournament match when it battles Bowling Green State University in a first round match up Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Convocation Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Eagles enter the tournament as the No. 5-seed while the Falcons are the No. 12-seed. Ball State won the MAC regular-season championship and is the top-seed. Ohio is the No. 2-seed after winning the MAC East Division. The fourth-seeded Huskies of Northern Illinois will await the winner of the EMU/BGSU match in quarterfinals. The MAC tournament begins with the first round matches at campus site Tuesday, Nov. 16. The event then moves to Toledo, Ohio and the SeaGate Centre. The quarterfinals are Friday, Nov. 19, the semifinals are Saturday, Nov. 20, and the finals are Sunday, Nov. 21.
EAGLES AND FALCONS BATTLE FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON: Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green are hooking up for the 51st meeting in the all-time series Tuesday night at the Convocation Center. The Falcons hold a 28-22 edge in the series, however, the Eagles swept BGSU (25-22, 25-11, 25-23) earlier this season, Oct. 16, at the Convocation Center in the annual Dig Pink match.
Tuesday's showdown will mark the third time EMU and BGSU have squared off in the postseason tournament. Eastern Michigan has won both postseason meetings, a 3-0 sweep in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 MAC Tournament, Nov. 18, and a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2003 MAC Tournament, Nov. 18.
EMU IN PAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCES: Eastern Michigan's volleyball program has appeared in 11 of the last 12 postseason MAC tournaments under the leadership of head coach Kim Berrington. The Green and White sport a 9-14 all-time record in MAC Tournament play, including two championship game appearances during the 1988 and 1990 campaigns. Last season, the Eagles were ousted in the first round by Central Michigan University, 3-2, Nov. 17, 2009.
EMU's last MAC Tournament victory was three years ago in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Tournament when the seventh-seeded Eagles proved up for the role of spoiler, knocking off the second-seeded and MAC West Division Champions Broncos of Western Michigan, 3-1 (30-28, 30-21, 31-33, 31-29).
REMAINING WHITE-HOT: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team comes into the night with a 23-10 record, that includes winning 78 of its 124 sets played. EMU's 23-10 start is the program's best since the 2002 campaign when the Green and White notched a 27-6 record through its first 33 matches. The 10-6 record in Mid-American Conference play was also the squad's best finish since the 2005 season.
STEIN SETS EMU SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR DIGS: Junior Haley Stein has etched her name in the record books, becoming EMU volleyball's all-time leader for digs in a season. Stein has 714 digs, 74 more than previous record holder and former teammate Ashley Cudney. Cudney has 640 digs during the 2006 campaign.
Stein is making waves not only in the Mid-American Conference, but nationally as well. The Carleton, Mich. native currently ranks second in digs per set at 5.81. Valparaiso's Taylor Root is the NCAA Division I leader at 5.83 digs per set.
LARGEST TURNAROUND IN SCHOOL HISTORY: The 18-game improvement from five wins in 2009 to the 22 victories this season is the largest in school history. The previous standard of a 12-game turnaround came during the 1990 campaign, when the Eagles went from 18 victories to 30 wins, and again in 2001, when EMU went from seven wins to 19. The 1993 team posted a 10-game improvement and the 1999 squad finished with a nine-game improvement.
MAC SUCCESS: The Eagles recorded their 10th Mid-American Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Toledo, Nov. 6. It is the seventh time in program history and sixth time in Head Coach Kim Berrington's tenure that EMU has reached the 10-win plateau during MAC action. The most conference wins in a season was set by the 2005 squad that went 14-2 to capture the West Division title.
IAQUANIELLO IN RAREFIED AIR: Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello is approaching uncharted territory for an EMU student-athlete. The Plymouth, Mich. native ranks fourth all-time in an EMU single-season with 476 kills and fifth in a single-season in attack attempts with 1,300. Nikki Stubbs holds the kills standard for one year with 584 markers in 1990, while Jennifer Nighswander swung 1,401 times in 2003.
THE MAC TOURNAMENT: EMU is the No. 5 seed for the MAC Tournament and faces No. 12 seed Bowling Green in the first round Tuesday night. There are also three other first round contests as No. 6 seed Central Michigan hosts No. 11 Miami, No. 7 Akron hosts No. 10 Buffalo, and No. 8 Toledo hosts No. 9 Kent State. The top four seeds get byes into the quarterfinals and they are No. 1 Ball State, No. 2 Ohio, No. 3 Western Michigan, and No. 4 Northern Illinois. The winner of EMU's match with BGSU will play Northern Illinois in the quarterfinals.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Green and White have enjoyed the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation Center over the past 10 seasons, posting a 71-37 mark in the “Nest,” including seven home victories this season.
