Baseball Claims 6-4 Win Over Akron

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Behind a strong performance from sophomore pitcher Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) and a timely two-run homer by sophomore Matt Skriving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow), the Eastern Michigan University baseball team won its first Mid-American Conference game of the season Friday night, April 3, edging out the University of Akron, 6-4, at Oestrike Stadium.

EMU improves to 5-22 (1-6 MAC) with the win, while the Zips drop to 5-22 (2-5 MAC) with the loss.

Chaffins went six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and fanning three Zips to earn the win, his first of the season.

Skirving finished 1-for-3 with a home run, his third of the season, while senior Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) went 2-for-3 with one run and two stolen bases in the win.

After the Zips put one run on the board in the top of the first, the Eagles answered with a three-run inning after capitalizing on a pair of Akron errors to take a 3-1 lead.

Skirving extended EMU's lead to four in the bottom of the fifth, as his two-run homer over the right field wall scored sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead.

The Zips pulled within two in the top of the ninth, as Kevin Wammes gave up an RBI single through the left side by Kevin Haas to make it a 6-4 game. But Wammes came back to strike out Brandon White with two runners on base to give EMU the win and earn the save, his first of the season.

The Eagles and Zips are back in action tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium, as junior Kevin Sikora (Youngstown, Ohio-Boardman) is scheduled to start for EMU, while Frank Turocy will get the nod for Akron.
