Ball State shuts out EMU to pick up first MAC win of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped its first Mid-American Conference match of the season, falling 3-0 to the Ball State University Cardinals, Sunday, Sept. 28 at Scicluna Field. With the loss, the Eagles move to 6-3-2 (1-1-0 MAC) on the year, while the Cardinals even their record at 5-5-0 (1-1-0 MAC).
BSU got on the board with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when Megan Ridley took advantage of a free kick after an Eagle foul, beating EMU keeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) high from 25 yards out. Her goal gave the Cards a 1-0 halftime advantage and a lead they would not relinquish. BSU dominated offensively in the first half, out-shooting the Eagles, 8-3.
Both teams tightened up defensively to begin the second half, with neither team really threatening to score for the first 30 minutes. That changed in the 77th minute, as the Cardinals tacked on two goals in a span of four minutes. BSU first scored off a Jen Vilkoski corner, with an Emily Rein header finding the back of the net. Just a few minutes later, the Cardinals’ Jacki Eft added another goal, scoring off a short through ball from Sarah Schumacker to push the BSU lead to 3-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Manville allowed three goals, while making four saves on the afternoon. BSU goalie Rachael Murphy picked up her fourth shutout of the season, stopping five Eagle shots. The Cardinals managed to out-shoot the Eagles, 15-9 for the game, controlling the tempo and keeping EMU on the defensive for most of the contest.
EMU continues its homestand to begin MAC play next weekend when Western Michigan and Northern Illinois come to Ypsilanti. First up for the Eagles are the WMU Broncos, with the in-state rivals slated to play Friday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. Following that contest, the Eagles will face NIU, Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
