Ohio uses seven run first en route to series finale win

Box Score

ATHENS
, Ohio. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a 14-8 setback today, April 13, here at Bob Wren Stadium at the helm of the Ohio University Bobcats. The series finale win by Ohio marked the end of a four-game Mid-American Conference winning streak for the Green and White, and halted a four-game losing streak for the Bobcats.

EMU falls to 10-22, 7-2 MAC on the year while Ohio improves to 16-16, 8-4 MAC.

Leading the Eagles was senior right-fielder Mike Sacha (Farmington Hills, Mich.-St. Clair C.C.), posting a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate. Sacha tallied four doubles and two RBI in the losing effort. Taking the loss today was sophomore Kevin Sikora (Youngstown, Ohio-Boardman), lasting just one-third of an inning, giving up seven runs on six hits.

For the third straight game the Eagles scored in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead early on when junior Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) reached on an error by third baseman Brandon Besl and later scored on an Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) groundout to the pitcher.

Ohio wasted no time in answering the Eagles, using a seven run first inning to jump out to a commanding 7-1 lead and force EMU to turn to the bullpen after just a third of an inning for Sikora (0-3). The Bobcats tallied six hits in the inning, capped off by three-run homer by Zach Keen.

Both teams swapped runs in the second inning, bringing the score to 8-2 in favor of the home Bobcats. The Eagles cut the deficit to 10-6 after a four-run fourth inning, making good on two of Ohio’s game-high six errors.

After Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) reached on a walk, Josh Ivan (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) followed up with a single to center field to put the Eagles in scoring position with no outs. Sacha’s second double of the game scored Davis for the first run of the inning before a costly throwing error by Keen at second base on a routine grounder by Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) Sacha and Ivan to score. Powell’s first of two hits on the day scored the final Eagle run of the inning.

EMU added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning to come within two at 10-8, but the Bobcats ended any threat of a late comeback, scoring three in the sixth and one in the seventh to go up 14-8.

The Green and White return to action Tuesday, April 15, traveling just down the road to Ann Arbor for a single game against the University of Michigan. First pitch is slated for a 6:30 p.m.
