Eagles notch ninth consecutive conference victory
DeKLAB, Ill. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team notched its ninth consecutive Mid-American Conference victory defeating Northern Illinois, 6-1, to remain atop the West Division standings here Friday afternoon at Ralph McKinzie Field.
EMU (17-16, 13-1 MAC) was once again led by junior ace pitcher Jeff Fischer (5-3) who tallied his fourth straight conference victory going 8.0 innings with six strikeouts allowing only one earned run on six scattered hits. NIU (21-17, 9-7 MAC) pitcher Trevor Feeney also has a good effort notching seven strikeouts allowing four runs (thee earned) on four hits.
Junior Steve Bradshaw led the Eagles’ offense hitting 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored, and his first home run of the season. Senior Trumaine Riley also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while junior Josh Ivan went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Northern Illinois was led by Matt Behren went 2-for-3 and scored the lone NIU run.
NIU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Behrn was driven in by a Pat Minogue RBI single to left field.
EMU took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Derek Lehrman led off with a single and moved over to second by a sacrifice by Patrick Dean. Junior Jeff Davis notched a double and sophomore Aaron Powell reached on an error by the shortstop to score Lehrman. Riley capitalized on the error with a RBI single to right field to plate Davis for a 2-1 EMU advantage.
EMU added another two runs for a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning on Bradshaw’s two-run shot over the left field fence.
The Eagles took a 6-1 lead in the ninth courtesy of a Bradshaw RBI single to score Jimmy Gulliver and a sacrifice fly by Davis to plate Riley for the victory.
EMU and NIU play game two of the three-game series Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
