OXFORD, Ohio - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami University, 11-4 and 9-1 Saturday afternoon at McKie Field.
With the loss, EMU falls to 13-14 (5-3 MAC) and Miami moves to 11-15 (3-5 MAC)
In game one, EMU tallied 13 hits but only could muster four runs off Miami pitcher John Ely while the RedHawks jumped to an early start putting up eight runs (six earned) on Eagle ace George Biddle (3-2). Senior Matt Moffett led the Eagles offensively going 1-for-3 from the plate with one home run, one run scored and two RBI. Junior Ryne Robinson went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to lead Miami.
With the scored tied at 1-1 in the top of the third inning, Moffett put the Eagles up 3-1 with a two run home run driving in sophomore Steve Bradshaw. However, the lead would not last long as Miami senior Geoff Orr laced a double to the base of the wall in left field that plated three runs and gave the RedHawks a 4-3 lead before the Eagles were able to record an out. With two outs in the frame, Miami tacked on four more runs increasing the lead to 8-3.
Miami added two more runs in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 10-3 lead. A Bradshaw single scored Jeff Hehr in the top of the sixth making the score 10-4 but that would be as close and the Eagles would get as the RedHawks added one more run in the eighth for the 11-4 victory.
The EMU bats could not get going in the nightcap as Miami senior pitcher Graham Taylor tossed 8.0 innings allowing only one run on four hits. Kyle Road, Trumaine Riley, Bradshaw and Eric Pelot were the only Eagles to tally hits off of Taylor. Sophomore Jeff Fisher (5-3) picked up the loss going 6.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts earning only one run out of seven.
Miami got off to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning tallying four runs on four hits. EMU cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth as junior Brian Blackburn grounded to second base scoring sophomore Josh Ivan for the only Eagle run of the game.
The RedHawks added three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh inning to notch the 9-1 victory.
EMU and Miami will conclude the weekend series on Sunday, April 9, at 1 p.m.
