Baseball Tames Huskies, 7-3

YPSILANTI, Mich. –The Eastern Michigan University baseball team got a solid effort from senior pitcher Will Stewardson en route to a 7-3 victory over visiting Northern Illinois here Saturday night at Oestrike Stadium. Stewardson notched his third victory of the season going 8.0 innings allowing only five hits with three strike outs and five walks while sophomore Jeff Hehr accounted for three out of five total Eagle hits.
Hehr also led the EMU (24-17, 11-6 MAC) going 3-for-5 at the plate with his third home run of the year, four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Jeff Thomas led NIU (21-22, 8-9 MAC) hitting 1-for-4 with two RBI.
For the second consecutive game, Northern Illinois took an early lead in the first inning courtesy of a Thomas single which drove in two runs for a 2-0 lead. Eastern responded in the bottom of the frame as Hehr hit a two-run shot over the left field fence to tie the score at 2-2.
EMU took its first lead of the game in the second inning as Trumaine Riley scored on a throwing error by NIU catcher Anthony Venetucci giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
The Huskies came back in the top of the third tying the score at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly.
EMU earned some breathing room in the bottom of the fourth inning with a clutch double by Hehr scoring Isaiah Gainforth and Jeff Davis. Steve Bradshaw then followed with a single to second base plating Hehr to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead.
EMU added another run in the seventh as NIU pitcher Andy Deain walked Matt Moffett in a bases loaded situation to score Hehr giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
Game three between EMU and Northern Illinois is Sunday, April 30 at Oestrike Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
