DAY 1 RECAP
SPRING LAKE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team concluded action at the Lubbers Cup, Sunday, April 9, on a rough and choppy day that canceled all but one race. The Eagles made it count though, winning their only race on the day.
In total, EMU won seven of nine events on the weekend. With their performances, they took home two awards as well. The 1-V8+ boat captured the Nancy Lubbers Cup as the top Varsity 8+ boat after winning all three races on the weekend. The Novice 8+ boat, meanwhile, notched the Michele Golightly Cup as the top Novice 8+ boat after they won both competitions yesterday.
The 1-V8+ was able to get on the water in the first race of the day before high winds canceled the rest of the races on the day. In a shortened course, the 1-V8+ won its third race of the weekend, knocking off boats from Drake and Marquette with a time of 3:42.6.
"You never like seeing races being canceled but it was a smart and safe decision by the regatta staff," Head Coach Kemp Savage detailed. "The 1V did get out and race and really improved their speed for the weekend in their shortened race against Drake. We are looking forward to getting back out on the water the next two weeks to build our speed going into the George Mason Invite in Virginia."
Eastern now has a couple of weeks away from competition before hitting the water again at the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 23. Action from Occoquan, Va. will run throughout the day.
