SPRING LAKE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team completed its first day at the 22nd annual Lubbers Cup, Saturday, April 8, on Spring Lake. The Eagles had a successful day of racing, claiming victory in six of eight races.

In total, EMU had four boats out on the water, with each competing in two races. The 1-V8+ and Novice 8+ swept their respective events, while the 2-V8+ and Varsity 4+ went one for two.

"The first full race is always a question mark, you think you are fast and are ready to go, but you never know until you test against another team," Head Coach Kemp Savage explained. "It was nice to get those first races under our belt today and find out we are moving well. The 1V rowed very well for both races, the Novice 8 rowed like a much more experienced boat putting a lot of time on their competition, the four had a really nice first race, but struggled in the building chop, and the 2V really made some great adjustments to get their first win against Grand Valley."

Eastern began the day with a commanding victory in the 1-V8+ race as EMU's top boat came in ahead of two Big Ten programs, Purdue and Ohio State, by 12 and 26 seconds, respectively. The Novice 8+ boat followed that up with a head-to-head showdown with Purdue, besting them again with a time of 6:52.1, 18 seconds faster.

In the first 2-V8+ contest, EMU was beat out by Purdue, finishing with a time of 7:36.9. EMU's Varsity 4+ boat then hit the water for the final race of session one. They were sharp, knocking off boats from Drake and Illinois with a time of 7:53.3.

After a midday break, racing got started back up with the Novice 8+ boat, which notched their second win, this time over host GVSU with a 6:54.6 time, 35 second better than the Lakers' time. The Varsity 4 was the next up, and they took second in a race with Case Western and Purdue. They finished 16 seconds better than the Boilermakers.

The penultimate race featured the 2-V8+ boat, and they earned their first win of the day, edging out GVSU by three seconds with a time of 7:20.9. In the final race, the 1-V8+ put a capper on the successful outing with a win over Marquette and GVSU, coming in with a time 6:42.1.

EMU will return to the water tomorrow, April 9, with four more races, one from each boat. Action from Spring Lake begins at 8:30 a.m.
