Here is a look back at some of the top stories from the 2015-16 calendar year
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – As the calendar gets closer to the 2016-17 season beginning, EMUEagles.com takes a look back on the significant achievements and news worthy items that highlighted 2015-16. We celebrated victories, picked ourselves up after defeats, honored legends and said good bye to heroes. Its been a transformative year in many ways for an athletic department that strives to build champions on the fields of competition, in the classroom and in the community.
Here's a look back at some of the top stories from this past year.
Women's Track and Field Claims the Triple Crown with Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track Championships
After a fantastic final day of competition that saw 15 Eagles place within the top-three, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team captured its conference-leading 12th Mid-American Conference title in program history Saturday, May 14. The Green and White finished with 152 points to secure the win, while second-place Akron totaled 130 points. The Eagles had an extraordinary final day of competition, amassing a whopping total of 119 points to jump from fourth to first by a large margin. With the victory, Eastern becomes the first program since Akron in 2005-06 to win the cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships all within one season. Overall, the team had five event wins, with both the mid-distance and distance squads doing exceptionally well.
EMU Gymnastics Claims Program's Second MAC Championship En Route to NCAA Regional Berth
The 2016 season was a banner year for the team, including a sensational regular season. At the MAC Championships, the team excelled, taking home their second MAC title in program history, the first being in 2007. Eastern finished with a 196.425, in large part due to fantastic beam and floor rotations. Specifically, the team set a program record on beam with a 49.325, while the squad also posted three 9.9's on floor. From there, the team traveled to Ann Arbor for NCAA Regionals, where they once again impressed, finishing fourth with a score of 196.250. In the Crisler Center, the Green and White more than held their own against some of the top teams in the nation, finishing just .275 away from tying first-place Stanford and Auburn. In fact, after two rotations, the Eagles were tied for first-place in the talented field. Finally, sophomore Rachel Slocum (Holly Springs, N.C.-Holly Springs) earned a berth to the NCAA Championships, which was just the second in EMU history.
Darius Jackson Selected by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft
Eastern Michigan University running back Darius Jackson (Sparta, Ill.-Sparta) was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft Saturday, April 30, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Jackson was the 216th overall pick in the three-day selection process. Jackson was the first player from Eastern to be selected into the NFL since T.J. Lang was chosen 109th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2009 draft. He was the 27th EMU player to be picked in the draft and the first running back since Gary Patton was selected 172nd overall by the New York Jets in 1988. Overall, he is just the second Eastern Michigan player to be selected by the Cowboys, joining Ken Miller, who was taken in the seventh round by Dallas back in 1981.
Football Posts Historic Victory at Wyoming
The Eastern Michigan University football team used 38 first half points to cruise to a 48-29 non-conference road victory over the University of Wyoming, Sept. 12, 2015, at War Memorial Stadium. The victory snapped a 14-game road skid for the team dating back to the 2012 campaign as well as marking the program's first non-conference road victory since 1988. As a team, EMU put up big offensive numbers with a balanced attack of 176 yards on the ground and 330 through the air for a total of 506 yards. They were also efficient, as they converted 7-of-12 third downs and were 4-for-4 in the red zone. Defensively, the Green and White played lock-down pass defense, allowing only 32 yards through the air. EMU also won the turnover battle, as they forced one and did not suffer one themselves.
Women's Cross Country Captures First MAC Title in Program History
Behind an individual title from junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team claimed their first ever Mid-American Conference title at the 2015 MAC Championships, Oct. 31, 2015. The Eagles posted a team score of 55 points, placing three harriers within the top-six. With the men winning the MAC Championship as well, the Eagles became the first to have both the men and women claim cross country titles in the same season since Bowling Green accomplished the feat in 1995. The Green and White were paced by Bogdanova, who claimed the individual MAC title and crossed the finish line in 20:39.26, becoming the fourth Eagle to win the race.
Darius Jackson Sets EMU Single-Season Touchdown Mark
Despite giving Central Michigan University all they could handle in the final game of the 2015 season, the Eastern Michigan University football team dropped a heartbreaker, 35-28, Nov. 27, in Mid-American Conference action at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. It was senior running back Darius Jackson (Sparta, Ill.-Sparta) leading the way in his final EMU game. He finished with 15 carries for 93 yards, his eighth game of 90-plus rushing yards this season. The Sparta, Ill. native also scored two more touchdowns in the game, breaking the single-season EMU record for scores in a season with 16 TD's. With the 93 yards, Jackson went for over 1,000 in the 2015 season, becoming the first tailback to accomplish this feat since Bronson Hill in 2013, and was just the 13th all-time to do it for the Eagles. He finished with 1,089 yards on the season, which was the 10th most in a single season in EMU history. Jackson also wrapped up his career as the 14th all-time leading rusher with 1,597 yards.
EMU Men's Swimming & Diving Claims Program's 33rd MAC Championship
The EMU men's swimming and diving team claimed the program's 33rd Mid-American Conference Championship, March 5. The Green and White crowned three more individual champions in addition to winning the final event of the day, finishing the meet with 846 points. In addition to the Eagles dominating performance, Buck Smith was named Diving Coach of the Year while Peter Linn was voted Swimming Coach of the Year. The award marks the 16th in Smith's tenure. It marked the seventh time Linn received the honor. Andrew Henry was named MAC Outstanding Swimmer and Alex Chan was awarded MAC Outstanding Diver while Tom Gillis was named MAC Freshman Diver of the Year. The Green and White also landed 10 on the All-MAC squads, including five on the first team.

Behind an incredible overall team performance, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team repeated as Mid-American Conference Champions at the 2015 MAC Championships, Oct. 31, 2015. The Eagles claimed five spots within the top-10, as junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) was crowned the individual MAC Champion, marking the 16th time that an EMU harrier has claimed the title. With this conference title, the Green and White have claimed six in a row, breaking their previous school record of five. With the women winning the MAC Championship as well, the Eagles are the first to have both the men and women claim cross country titles in the same season since Bowling Green accomplished the feat in 1995.
EMU Names Fred Castro Head Women's Basketball Coach
Fred Castro, an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Washington for the past three years, has been named the new head women's basketball coach at Eastern Michigan University, Vice President/Director of Athletics Heather Lyke announced May 5. A rising star in the coaching world, the 36-year old Castro has spent the past 15 years climbing the ranks from student manager to now the eighth head coach in EMU program history. During his career, he has worked tirelessly to learn and has held nearly every position within a women's basketball program including serving as offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, video coordinator, and travel coordinator.
James Thompson IV Honored as MAC Freshman of the Year
The Mid-American Conference announced March 8, that freshman James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was named the MAC's Freshman of the Year in a landslide. Thompson earned 33 of a possible 38 first place votes on his way to becoming the first member of the EMU basketball program to earn the award since Lorenzo Neely was named the conference's best freshman back in 1988. In addition, the Baton Rouge, La. native became just the second Eastern Michigan student-athlete to earn the award. Thompson averaged 14.8 points per game and a conference high 10.7 rebounds per game. Thompson shot 64.5 percent from the floor, which ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in large part to the Baton Rouge, La. native tying a then-NCAA record of 26-straight field goal makes. In addition to his MAC Freshman of the Year honor, Thompson is the first Eagle to be named to both the Second Team All-MAC and All-Freshman team since Brandon Bowdry. Additionally, Thompson broke the Eastern Michigan freshman single season scoring record by posting 490 points during the 2015-16 campaign, while also grabbing 352 rebounds, good for the third-most in a single season at EMU, and the most by a freshman donning the Green and White.
Kelsey Murphy Shoots School-Record, Tourney Low 66 at Cardinal Classic
Junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) fired a scorching six-under par 66, the lowest round in school history and the low round of the tournament, to capture medalist honors with a career-best 211 (74-71-66) at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22, 2015. The individual title is the second of her career and the first by an Eagle since Murphy rallied from nine strokes back to win the Nittany Lion Invitational with a 218 (77-73-68), Oct. 5, 2014. As a team, the Eagles finished in second place with a two-day total of 880 (301-293-286) on the par 72, 6,204-yard Players Club course. EMU's final round tally bettered the previous program-low of 290 at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 8-9, 2007, by four strokes. Meanwhile the 54-hole tally also eclipsed the previous low of 884 (297-293-294) at the Westbrook Invitational, Feb. 26-27, 2012.
Men's Golf Sets School-Record an 18 & 54-Hole Round at the Desert Shootout
It was a record-setting day in the Valley of the Sun for the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team, as the Eagles mowed down the par-72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Club course at the Desert Shootout, March 19. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew fired a final round 16-under 272 to finish in fifth-place with a two-day tally of 839 (284-283-272). Numerous records fell on the day as the Eagles finished behind tournament champion Iowa State University, which posted a 41-under par 823 (276-275-272). EMU's 54-hole score shattered the program's previous record of 855 (287-288-280) set at the Xaiver Invitational, Oct. 14-15, 2002, while the team's final round mark of 272 was one stroke ahead of its previous single round standard of 273 set at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010.
Baseball Makes a Stellar Postseason Run in the MAC Tournament
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up its most successful season under second-year Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde in 2016. The team picked up 23 wins on their way to a Mid-American Conference tournament semifinal appearance, the programs first since 2011. On top of improving the team's overall win total by three and conference win total by one, the team also saw major improvements in its offensive and defensive statistics, primarily on the pitching mound. EMU improved its team ERA from 5.98 to 4.80 from 2015 to 2016, which was the best team ERA since 2011. The Eagles' hurlers baffled opponents all season long, totaling 381 strikeouts, tying the 1975 College World Series team for the third-most in program history. Offensively, EMU collected 19 more hits and scored 43 more runs in 2016 than in 2015. The team saw a power surge, slugging 35 points better this season, including clubbing 47 home runs, 28 better than 2015 and the most since 2010. The home run total ranked third in the MAC and 51st in the country. EMU was once again near the top in the nation in stolen bases, finishing third in swipes with 127 total. That figure surpassed 2015's total of 105, and ranked tied for fifth in program history with the 1976 College World Series runners-up.
Eagle Wrestling Completes Shutout of Michigan State, 34-0
Behind a dominating all-around performance from all 10 of their starters, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team shutout Michigan State University, 34-0, in a dual, Dec. 2, 2015. The victory marked the first shutout for the Eagles since the 2012-13 season when the Green and White blanked Itasca Community College 57-0, Nov. 24.
Rowing Captures Second Straight Harvey Cup
The Eastern Michigan University crew team captured its second consecutive Harvey Cup, by taking two out of three races from the University at Buffalo at the George Mason Invite, Sunday April 17. EMU also claimed victory in four of its six races on the day. The victory marked the fourth Harvey Cup in program history. The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years. EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title and both race each season to determine the unofficial "MAC Champion."
