Tennis Falls at Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell to host Stetson University, 7-0, Monday, March 2, at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Complex in DeLand, Fla. The Eagles (9-4), currently on a two-match road trip in Florida as part of their annual Spring Break trip, played their first outdoor match of 2026 when they faced the Hatters (4-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern nearly swiped the doubles point as the deciding match went to a tiebreaker. After the Eagles fell at No. 1, the freshmen duo of Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) captured a 6-2 win at No. 2 to tie the doubles matches at 1-1. The final match saw Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) and Regina Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) battle to a 6-6 tie before falling in the tiebreaker and see the Hatters take a 1-0 lead.

In singles action, Stetson won the first five matches in straight sets to secure the team win. The final match of the day saw Kseniia Saenko (Voronezh, Russia/Gymnasium 2), playing in her first singles match of 2026, drop the first set before winning the second and forcing a tiebreaker that was won by Stetson, 10-6, to cap the team dual.

NOTING THE TEAM
» With the win, the Eagles fell to 9-4 while the Hatters improved to 4-4.
» Eastern fell to 6-3 all-time against Stetson, but lost two consecutive meetings after falling, 6-1, Feb. 25, 2014. All nine matches have been played in DeLand.
» The Eagles were swept by the Hatters for the first time in the series history. EMU is now 2-1 against SU when the dual ends in a sweep after winning by 9-0 scores in both 1984 and 1985.

Up Next
Eastern is back in action Wednesday, March 4, when the Eagles take on the Ospreys of No. 72 University of North Florida at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla. The match, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., will be the second of two in Florida this week and the final non-conference match for the Eagles before they open Mid-American Conference play at home March 13 against Northern Illinois University.
