Hess Paces Eagles at Tucker Invitational

Freshman tied for 24th at 2-under 214, finishing one stroke off his collegiate best
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (EMUEagles.com) – For the second time this week, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team competed in a 54-hole tournament as the Eagles tied for 15th place at the William H. Tucker Invitational, Sept. 19-20, in Albuquerque, N.M. Joshua Hess was the top finisher for the Eagles as he tied for 24th place individually.
As a team, the Eagles finished 7-over 871 (295-286-290) and tied with Colorado State University (292-284-295=871) for 15th place. Long Beach State University pulled out a five-stroke win in the race for the team title as its shot 23-under 841 (284-280-277) to beat out 22nd-ranked and host University of New Mexico, who was second at 18-under 846 (276-282-288). The University of Colorado and the University of Southern California tied for third place at 17-under 847 while the University of Texas-El Paso was fifth at 12-under 852.
Individually, Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) tied for 24th at 2-under 214 (72-71-71) as he shot at or under par in all three rounds for the first time in three tournaments with the Eagles. Additionally, his 214 strokes were one off his collegiate best of 213 that he shot in the season-opening Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 8-9). The remaining Eagles in the field included Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC), who tied for 48th at 1-over 217 (73-75-69); Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU), who tied for 62nd at 3-over 219 (75-68-76); Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College), who tied for 75th in his collegiate debut at 6-over 222 (75-73-74); and Carlos Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/Charleston (WV)), who tied for 93rd at 11-over 227 (76-74-77=227).

Eastern returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 28, when the Eagles trek across the state to Benton Harbor, Mich., to compete in the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate, Sunday-Monday, Sept. 28-29, at Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club. The event, hosted by Central Michigan University, will see 15 teams tee off in a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sept. 28 before and 8:30 a.m. start Sept. 29 signals the final round of play.
