Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Each Place Fifth in Season-Opening Meet

SHEPHERD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country programs opened their 2025 season running the 5k at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, hosted by Central Michigan University at Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Mich., Friday, Aug. 29.
The women's team finished fifth with 149 points, while the men's team finished fifth with 131 points, as the teams combined for a total of seven personal-best times.
Leading the way for the Eagles in the women's race was Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), with a time of 18:29.3 (27th), followed by Erika Van Loton (Garden City, Mich./Huron Valley Lutheran), with a personal best of 19:15.6 (41st). Next came Frankie Moore (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), in 19:29.8 (46th); Cara Weber (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle), in 19:30.9 (48th); and Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), in 19:31.1 (49th) to finish the scoring.
In the men's race, Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School), led the Eagles with a personal-best time of 15:07.5 (14th). Next to finish was Carson Vanderschaaf (Marquette, Mich./Marquette Senior), in 15:39.0 (27th); followed by Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County), in 16:01.2 (40th); Nicholas Kline (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills), in 16:05.3 (44th); and Drew Graves (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II), in 16:08.0 (46th) finishing scoring. All the runners on the men's squad had personal-best times. Ben Mussen (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth), made his collegiate debut, finishing the race in 16:33.3 (55th).
The women's race had 124 athletes compete, while the men's race featured 98.
