Baseball Posts Season-Best Offensive Performance in Win Over Miami

– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team won the final game of a three-game set against Miami University by a score of 19-12 Saturday, March 22, at Oestrike Stadium. 
 
Eastern Michigan was led by Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) who was 5-for-6 with four extra-base hits and one triple away from the cycle. 
 
Freshman right hander Fischer Hendershot (Flushing, Mich./Flint Powers) earned the win on the mound (1-0) marking the first of his collegiate career, as he struck out two in 1 ⅔ innings pitched. Miami's Taylor Echols (0-1) was credited with the loss. 
 
Eastern improved to 10-10 (6-3 MAC) on the season while Miami fell to 12-11 (7-2 MAC).
 
EMU had 18 hits as a team and went 18-for-41 from the plate including seven extra-base hits, five of which were doubles, along with a multi-homer (two) game from Hugo. 
 
Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley) also had a big game offensively for Eastern Michigan, as he went 4-for-5, with one double and two RBI. 
 
The Eagles scored in every inning except for third and the sixth.
 
How it Happened
Miami got on the board to start the game on a two-run home run to right field. It added one more run to go up 3-0 in the opening frame. Eastern Michigan came back to score one run in the first inning when Jellison singled up the left side to cut the Eagles' deficit to 3-1. EMU scored three more runs in the inning after Brendan Kleiman (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Frederick C.C.) knocked in two runs with a double, and later scored the extra run on a wild pitch.
 
The Eagles offense exploded in the second inning. They scored nine runs to go up 13-3. Some of the highlights included Hugo getting two hits, one double and one three-run home run, while Jellison, Ben Schechterman (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora/Ohio State) and Connor Walsh (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) all had run-scoring singles as the Eagles led 13-3 after two.
 
In the fourth, Miami was able to get two runs to cut its deficit to eight runs at 13-5, before Hugo hit his second home run of the game. The next inning, Miami scored two runs and the Eagles added another run on a John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.) double. 
 
After Miami scored one run in the sixth, the Eagles combined to score four runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Miami had four runs in the eighth to cut their deficit to 19-12, which served as the final score. 
 
Game Notes
» Eastern's record improved to 10-10 (6-3 MAC) while Miami's shifted to 12-11 (7-3 MAC). Through nine conference games, the Eagles stand fourth in the MAC with a 6-3 conference record and .667 winning percentage.
» Eastern set season highs in runs (19), hits (18), RBI (18), and walks (11).
» Hugo's career-high of six RBI ties for the second most by an individual in the MAC this season. He additionally recorded five hits, a career high, and became the first EMU player to record five hits since Cory Taylor vs. Oakland, April 9, 2024. 
» Hugo is one of only three players with five hits in a single game in the MAC this season. 
» Hugo's 13 total bases are the most in a game in 2025 for any player in the MAC.
» Hugo's two homers marks the third time this season in which an EMU player has homered multiple times in a game, with Travis and Stecko doing so against Pitt, Feb. 15, and Miami, March 21, respectively.
» Eastern Michigan as a team had 11 walks, the most in the Head Coach Robbie Britt era (2024-present).
» Jellison finished the afternoon with four hits, going 4-for-5, marking his second four-hit performance this season. He also had four hits against Pitt, Feb. 14.
» Schecterman, Walsh, and Hale each had two hits for a multi-hit performance. They drove in a combined five runs.
» Hendershot was the winning pitcher for Eastern Michigan, pitching 1 ⅔ innings for his first collegiate win.
» Drew Norris (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley Utah/Johnson C.C.) pitched 1 ⅔ innings, allowing no runs and just three hits. It is his second consecutive scoreless outing.
» The win marked Eastern's 10th of the season. Last season, it did not capture its 10th win until March 28, which was over Central Michigan.
» Every Eastern Michigan starter reached base safely in the win.
» The Eagles out-hit their opponent (18-16) for the 14th time this season. They are 9-5 when doing so. They also recorded double-digit hits for the 13th time, producing a 8-5 record when getting to the 10-hit mark. They have recorded 10+ hits in 14 out of their 20 games played this season. 
» Eastern posted its sixth game with double-digit runs, hits, and RBI. It is 5-1 when reaching the double figure mark in each category this season.
» Eastern Michigan's 19 runs stands as the third-most in a single game in the MAC this year. 
» Eastern Michigan's 18 hits are the third-most in a MAC game this year.
» Eastern's five doubles are the third-most in a game this season in the MAC.
» Offensively, EMU had only four strikeouts. It ties for the third-fewest strikeouts it has had in a game this year. It had three strikeouts at Presbyterian, March 2, and one at Western Michigan, March 14.
 
Historical Notes
» The series finale marked the 136th all-time game against the RedHawks. The Eagles are 65-71 all-time against Miami and have ended a six-game losing streak against the program, dating back to April 9, 2023.
» In the second inning, Eastern Michigan scored a total of nine runs, marking the most runs it has scored in an inning in the Britt era. It additionally is the most runs it has scored since it plated 10 against Toledo, May 4, 2021. 
» Eastern Michigan scored 19 runs on the day. The 19 runs are the most it has scored in the Britt era and the most runs it has scored in a game since April 11, 2023, when it scored 21 runs at Western Michigan.
» Eastern Michigan as a team had 11 walks in the win over Miami, its most in a single game since It had 12 walks at Niagara, April 30, 2023.
» The Eagles had 18 RBI, the most in the Britt era. Additionally, it is the most RBI it has had in a game since they had 19 RBI at Western Michigan, April 11, 2023.
