Eastern Earns First Win Over UMass, 80-74

Eagles move to 1-1 in MAC play after topping Minutemen in first meeting as conference foes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team prevailed against the University of Massachusetts, 80-74, Tuesday, Dec. 30, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Carlos Hart (Miami, Fla./North Miami/Valdosta State) led the Eagles in scoring with 23 points, earning a double-double with 12 rebounds to go in hand. Addison Patterson's (Mississauga, Ontario/Bella Vista College Prep/ Northwestern State) 14 points and 11 rebounds also earned himself a double-double.
Mohammad Habhab (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn/Central Michigan) added 20 points and nine rebounds and Jon Sanders II (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Christian/Northwestern State) added 12 points via two triples.
How It Happened
Eastern got off to a hot start, going up 9-2 after holding UMass to 0-of-8 from the field through the first five minutes.
The Minutemen closed the gap midway through the first half, taking their first lead of the game 21-20 with four free throws just under eight minutes left.
After a late surge from UMass put them up 35-31 with around two minutes left, Eastern couldn't close the gap and went into halftime down 41-38.
The second half began with each team trading baskets, the biggest lead being five between both squads. Eastern took the lead back with just over ten minutes left with a two-point jumper from Hart.
After jumping to a six-point lead with less than two minutes left in the game, the Eagles held on to force UMass to foul for possession and win 80-74.
