DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
A dominant second half helped the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team overcome a 13-point second-half deficit en route to upending the University of Detroit Mercy, 72-62, Tuesday, Nov. 18, inside Calihan Hall.
 
Eastern outscored the Titans, 42-19, in the game's final 18:16 as Addison Patterson (Mississauga, Ontario/Bella Vista/Northwestern State) scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
 
In addition to Patterson, EMU's other four starters all scored at least 10 points, highlighted by a 17-point outing from Jon Sanders II (Detroit, Mich./Southfield Christian/Northwestern State) and a double-double from Mohammad Habhab (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn/Central Michigan) with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
 
Godslove Nwabude (Anambra State, Nigeria/Mt. Zion Prep (Md.)) scored a career-high 10 points to go with six rebounds, while Carlos Hart (Miami, Fla./North Miami/Benedict College/South Georgia State/New Orleans/Valdosta State) added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
 
The Eagles limited UDM to 8-of-32 (25.0%) from the floor and 0-of-13 from three-point range in the second half.
 
How It Happened
Eastern burst out of the gates with a quick 10-2 run to start the game.
 
The Eagles extended their advantage to as many as nine at 17-8 on a three-pointer from Mak Manciel (Detroit, Mich./Stevenson/Detroit Mercy) at the 12:59 mark.
 
Detroit Mercy used a 16-4 run to take the lead before the Titans took their largest lead of the half, 39-30, into the intermission.
 
The hosts scored the first four points of the second frame to lead, 43-30, its largest lead of the contest.
 
Eastern used a quick 8-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 45-38 with 16:17 left. After UDM scored with 15:37 to go, the Eagles held the Titans without a field goal for 7:45 of the game en route to using a 17-4 run to tie the game at 47-47 on a Patterson slam.
 
After EMU tied the game on a Habhab free throw at the 7:36 mark, the Green and White did not trail the rest of the way.
 
Dunks by Patterson and Nwabude pushed Eastern's lead to 58-54 before a dagger three-pointer from Sanders II at the shot clock buzzer gave Eastern a 65-58 advantage with just 1:15 to go.
 
A trio of Patterson free throws gave EMU its largest lead of the contest at 72-62, the final score.
 
Game Notes
» Eastern was 25-of-53 (47.2%) from the field and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from the three-point line, while Detroit Mercy was 22-of-64 (34.4%) from the floor and 1-of-19 (5.3%) from three-point range.
» EMU held a 41-35 edge on the glass, including grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.
» Mohammad Habhab posted his third double-double in four games, becoming the first Eagle to do that since James Thompson IV in the 2018-19 season.
» Mohammad Habhab tallied a career-high five assists.
» Addison Patterson scored all 15 of his points in the second half, leading the team with a robust +23 plus-minus rating.
