ESTERO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Charlie Box
tied the program record with a second-round 63 before he sank a 20-foot birdie putt to in a playoff to earn medalist honors as his play helped the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team to a third-place finish at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 6-7, at West Bay Club in Estero, Fla. Box, now a seven-time winner on the collegiate circuit, became the first medalist for the team since the 2018-19 season.

As a team, the Eagles finished third in the 10-team field as they shot 27-under 837 (281-279-277) to place behind host and winner Florida Gulf Coast University, who was 37-under 827 (276-270-281) on one of its home courses, and runner-up Elon University, who shot 29-under 835 (283-278-274). The Eagles, who started the final round in fourth, moved ahead of two teams that tied for fourth in Stetson University (280-278-282) and George Mason University (276-280-284), both of whom finished at 24-under 840. Eastern, with two players in the top 15, recorded the third-lowest 54-hole score in program history.

Individually, Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC), the reigning Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week, got off to a slow start with an opening round 71 before shooting a program-record-tying 63 in the second round to jump 21 places in the standings. On the final day, he closed with a 67 to shot 15-under 201 and tie for the top spot before using a 20-foot birdie putt in the playoff with George Mason's Vaughn McMeans to take the title. The first individual winner for the program since Beau Breault captured the Dayton Flyer Invitational, Oct. 16-17, 2017, Box carded the second-best 54-hole score in EMU history behind only Tyler Lewis, who shot 200 at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 25-26, 2018.

Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) finished 14th overall as he shot 7-under 209 (68-73-68), posting the 19th-best score in program history. Chan, along with Box, joined the list of Eagles that have recorded at least two 54-hole tournament scores of 209 or lower in program history, becoming the sixth and seventh names, respectively, added to the list.

Three other Eagles competed in the tournament, including Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)), who tied for 26th at 2-under 214 (72-73-69), and Rory McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken), who shot 1-under 215 (70-72-73) to tie for 31st. Carlos Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/Charleston (WV)) also competed, but finished only two rounds as he shot 71 in round two and 74 in round three after withdrawing from the first round.

Team Notes
» The 837 strokes the Eagles recorded ranked as the third-lowest total in a 54-hole tournament in program history. The two scores ahead of this year's team are the 832 recorded at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational (Sept. 9-10, 2019) and the 836 tallied at the Loyola Intercollegiate (Feb. 25-26, 2018).
» Two of the round scores ranked among the top 20 all-time in program history as well. The 277 shots in round three tied for 10th all-time while the 279 strokes in round two tied for 16th. With those scores, it marked the first time the Eagles have recorded two rounds of 279 or lower in the same tournament since 2017 when Eastern shot rounds of 275 (round one) and 277 (round two) at the Loyola Intercollegiate.

Individual Notes
» Charlie Box opened with a first-round 1-under 71 before going off for a 9-under 63 in the second round and posting a final-round 67 on his way to shooting 15-under 201. This overall score stands as the second-lowest in program history behind only the 200 shot by Tyler Lewis in the Loyola Intercollegiate (Feb. 25-26, 2018). It also lowered Box' season best by five strokes after he shot 206 in the Jim DeLapa Collegiate, Sept. 28-29.
» The second-round 63 Charlie Box carded tied for the lowest single round in program history with current teammate Tim Chan, who shot 63 at the White Sands Bahamas Men's NCAA Invitational, Oct. 26, 2024.
» Charlie Box has won seven times as a collegiate player with his first six coming in the NJCAA ranks as a member of the Hutchinson College team. The win was not only his first at EMU, but also the first by an Eastern player since Beau Breault tied for the win at the Dayton Flyer Invitational, Oct. 16-17, 2017, in Kettering, Ohio.
» Tim Chan added his name to the 54-hole scoring list once again as his 7-under 209 tied for 19th all-time at Eastern. He and Charlie Box became the sixth and seventh Eagles, respectively, to record multiple 54-hole scores of 209 or lower in their careers.
