NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a midweek contest to the No. 9 ranked Vanderbilt University Commodores, 6-2, Tuesday, March 5, at Hawkins Field. The Eagles fell to 3-9 (0-0 Mid-American) on the season while the Commodores improved to 11-3 (0-0 Southeastern).

How it Happened
The Commodores jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as they plated four in the second inning.

The Eagles threatened in the fifth with two runners on after a double off the bat of Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif./University Prep/Crown College) and Brendan Kleiman (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Frederick C.C.) being hit by a pitch, garnering a free base.

Eastern next threatened in the top of the seventh as Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville) and Giano Zuccaro (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea Midpark/Charleston) each singled to center field in consecutive at-bats.

Vanderbilt put two more runs on the board in its half of the seventh inning with a two-run home run to left field.

EMU got on the board in the bottom of the eighth as Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) sent one over 400-feet into the center field stands, scoring Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater/Spring Arbor), and trimming the VU lead to four.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the game, concluding in a 6-2 win for the Commodores.

Game Notes
» Liam Baker (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) saw the second appearance of his career, and registered his first strikeout, freezing a Commodores' batter on a curve ball in the third inning.
» Schroedle grabbed his second double and fourth extra base hit of the season, as he sent one to left center field in the fifth.
» The Eagles tied a season-high in double plays with two. Taylor played a pivotal role defensively at second base, notching a perfect fielding percentage, and setting a career-high with six assists in the game. Taylor performed offensively as well, going 2-for-4 at the plate and securing his third multi-hit outing of the season.
» Hugo homered to left field in the eighth, scoring Miller, to trim the Vanderbilt lead to four. The homer marks Hugo's second of the season, while the RBIs go down as his sixth and seventh, respectively, for his first multi-RBI game of the season. Additionally, with the homer, the Eagles are tied for second in the MAC with 12 home runs this season.
» EMU was strong defensively, tallying a season-high 12 assists. The 12 helpers mark the most from the Green and White since it notched 13 in a 9-6 win over Kent State University, May 13, 2023.
» Drew Beckner (Westerville, Ohio/Big Walnut/Charleston), Isiah Lindsey (Nunica, Mich./Spring Lake/Lake Michigan/Lansing C.C.), and Aaron Pirkle (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany/Akron) each threw hitless appearances, marking the first for Beckner and Lindsey's respective EMU tenures, while Pirkle's marked his fourth. Pirkle has allowed one hit in just two of his six appearances this season.
» Eastern out-hit its opponent for the ninth time this season. The Eagles have failed to out-hit their opponent just three times in 2024.

Historical Notes
» The game with VU marked the fourth all-time between the Eagles and Commodores and the first since Feb. 24, 1994. With the result, Vanderbilt furthers its series advantage, 3-1.
» The contest marked Eastern's 108th against an SEC opponent.
