YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track and field teams got off to a hot start at the 2024 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday, Feb. 23, at Bob Park Track inside Bowen Field House as the host Eagles captured a trio of conference titles with both squads leading the team races through the first day of action.
The Eagles swept the weight throw with Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) leading things off as she used a personal-best toss of 19.46m (63-10.00) to win the women's event, add 10 points to the team standings, and move up to No. 2 all-time in program history. That was followed by freshman Ryan Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) capturing the men's crown with a personal-best heave of 22.24m (73-00.00) to move up to No. 3 all-time at Eastern and punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships in two weeks. The final title came in the men's long jump with Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) springing a best of 7.68m (25-02.25) to win the title and move up to No. 2 all-time in program history as well.
Quick Notes
» Miranda Cadwell captured her first indoor weight title and gave EMU its first women's title in the event since Kadian Clarke won in 2022.
» Eastern has now won the men's weight throw in back-to-back years with Ryan Johnson claiming the title this year after Newlyn Stephenson was victorious last season.
» The Eagles swept the weight throw for the first time in program history and just the fourth time in MAC history. Akron accomplished the feat in 2012 before Kent State doubled up with sweeps in 2017 and 2018.
» Formula Thompson's victory in the long jump gave the Eagles back-to-back titles in the event after teammate Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France/Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves/American International) won the title last year. It marked the second time the Eagles have won two titles in a row came in 2015 and 2016 with Donald Scott and Tyler Brown winning, respectively.
» Ten marks recorded by the Eagles moved into the all-time top 10 in program history, including six in the men's heptathlon, five of which came from Samuel Jeffery (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley Secondary), who sits third in the heptathlon after Day One.
» A total of 15 personal-best marks were attained by Eastern athletes during the first day of the meet.
In The Team Race
The Eagles hold the lead in both team races with the women having scored 36.5 points and the men 42. In the women's standings, EMU is just ahead of Miami University (34.5) with Bowling Green State University (29), Kent State University (26), and Ball State (23) rounding out the top five. On the men's side, the Eagles hold a four-point lead over the University at Buffalo (38) with Akron (28) and Kent State (12) rounding out the men's standings.
Adding it Up
On the women's side, four other events scored points for the Eagles, led by a runner-up finish from Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) in the 5,000m run. Davies finished the 25.5 laps around the facility in 16:24.00 to add eight team points. Her fellow distance runners combined to clock a time of 11:36.69 - the eighth-fastest in program history - to take third in the distance medley relay and add six more points. In the field events, Fleur van der Linden (Drunen, Netherlands/d'Oultremont College) took third in the pole vault with her clearance of 3.70m (12-02.00) for another six points while Antonia Woods (Winchester, Ohio/Groveport Madison) finished sixth in the long jump and earned three points with her leap of 5.72m (18-09.25).
The men added points in three events with Lopes Ribeiro placing third in the long jump at 7.31m (23-11.75) to earn six points while Eric Haddock Jr. (Raleigh, N.C./Southeast Raleigh/Appalachian State) added four points by finishing fourth with a best of 7.30m (23-11.50). Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) also placed third in the weight throw with a heave of 18.34m (60-02.00) while the distance medley relay placed third in 9:59.53 for another six points.
