Soccer Battles Back for 2-2 Draw at Dartmouth

Eastern tied the match twice on goals from Arielle Fink and Meagan Lukowski

HANOVER, N.H. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team fought to the end to secure its 2-2 draw at Dartmouth College Friday, Aug. 25, as the Eagles battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits on a rainy night at Burnham Field in Hanover, N.H. The Eagles (0-1-2) received goals from Arielle Fink (Bradford, Ont./Holy Trinity Catholic) and Meagan Lukowski (Bay City, Mich./Bay City) to pull level with the Big Green (0-0-1) in the end.

How It Happened
Both sides battled for maintained possession throughout the first half of play, but neither were able to find the back of the net, sending the match to halftime in a scoreless draw. The opening 45 minutes saw Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich./Lansing Catholic) lead the charge with three shots, two of which were on frame, while Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) turned away all three shots she faced in goal.

With the rain starting to fall and the second half underway, the hosts held the upper hand in possession and broke the scoreless draw in the 64' with the first goal. On the play, the Big Green earned a corner kick and sent the ball into the box where Holland dove and punched the ball away from danger, only to see it wind up at the feet of Carly Retterer, who fired a shot back at the goal and scored, making it 1-0. The Eagles tied it less than five minutes later, however, as Fink netted the first goal of her collegiate career. On the play, Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) carried the ball down the left side of the box and sent a low pass across the front of the six-yard box where the keeper attempted to fall on the ball only to see it spilled toward the back post where Fink ran on and tapped the ball home to make it 1-1.

The back-and-forth action continued and, 10 minutes later, the hosts reclaimed the lead with their second goal, this time in the 82' at 81:58. On the play, Retterer ripped a shot on goal where Holland parried the ball away. Daisy Granholm collected the deflected ball and hit home into the empty net to make it 2-1. Despite trailing again, the Eagles responded just over one minute later (83:04) as Lukowski's 84' goal pulled the visitors level once again. On the play, O'Farrell took possession of the ball on the right wing and whipped a pass into the middle of the box where a defender jumped and headed it high into the air. As it came down, Lukowski settled under it and headed it home for the eventual 2-2 draw.
