Eastern bested Coastal Carolina University and UCF Knights Cheer Club
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – For the first time in program history, the Eastern Michigan University cheer program is national champions.
The Eagles claimed the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Intermediate Small Coed Division IA title Friday, April 9, besting Coastal Carolina University and UCF Knights Cheer Club.
"I am beyond proud of these athletes and the work they put in this season," said Head Cheer Coach/Spirit Coordinator Mary Spilski. "We were making changes to the routine as recent as this morning while walking off the warmup mat and onto the finals stage. This team took every challenge, injury, and pause in our season as a learning experience, which only made them more determined. Nothing was getting in their way! I know every coach says this, but the pride I feel is unmatched and the love I have for this team and EMU is unending!"
EMU sat in third-place after the prelims with a performance score of 90.05. In the finals, the Green and White collected a raw score of 93.5 while racking up 1.5 deductions to final with a 91.5125. Coastal finished with a 91.3917 and UCF tallied a 90.9708.
Eastern Michigan finished fourth at the event in 2019 after posting a fifth-place showing at its inaugural appearance in 2018.
