Men’s Track and Field Leads After Day One of MAC Indoor Championships

Baldvin Magnusson and Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed each captured an individual title

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field sits in first place with a team score of 46 points after the opening day of the 2020 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday, Feb. 28 inside Stile Athletics Field House.

Redshirt junior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) earned one of EMU's two individual titles at day one of the conference meet, as he claimed first prize in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 7.58 meters. The Eagles also earned three of the top four spots in the weight throw, as redshirt senior Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) was the runner-up with a toss of 21.11 meters, while fellow redshirt senior Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) finished in third place at 20.60 meters, and freshman Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) was fourth with his own heave of 20.60 meters.

On the track, sophomore Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) emerged victorious in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:25.25, while redshirt freshman Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) finished in third place at 14:28.12. Junior Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) shined in both of his events, placing third in the 400-meter qualifiers with a mark of 48.01 seconds, and fourth in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 21.35 seconds.

Meanwhile, redshirt junior Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) finished first overall in the 60-meter hurdles trials with a time of 7.90 seconds, while sophomore Payne Wylie (Saskatachewan, Canada-Colonsay School) also qualified for the title race as he finished seventh overall at 8.27. Additionally, senior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) qualified for the 60-meter dash championship, finishing seventh in the preliminary round with a time of 6.91 seconds.

The MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will resume Saturday, Feb. 29 with the remaining men's heptathlon events starting at 10 a.m. Field events will get back underway at 1 p.m., while running events start back up at 1:25 p.m. The awards ceremony is expected to take place at 5 p.m.
