Driesenga is a three-time All-Big Ten honoree

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Head Softball Coach Melissa Gentile announced the addition of Sara Driesenga to the coaching staff, Tuesday, Dec. 19, as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2018 season. At EMU, Driesenga will work primarily with the pitching staff. With the hiring, Magali Frezzotti has been promoted to the role of assistant coach.

"I am thrilled to welcome Sara Driesenga to our coaching staff and I know that she will have an immediate impact with our program," added Gentile. "Her playing credentials speak for themselves but what you cannot read on paper is what a fantastic person she is. I know that our players will connect with her right away and she will do a great job for us this season."

As a player, Driesenga was a standout pitcher for the University of Michigan, where she was a five-year player and a three-time NFCA Great Lakes All-Region recipient. Making two appearances in the Women's College World Series during her career, she pitched a complete-game shutout her sophomore season to defeat Arizona State, June 1, 2013, and advance the Wolverines to the second round of the WCWS. During her senior season, the three-time All-Big Ten honoree had a sparkling 0.78 ERA in four games, but was lost to an injury and was granted a medical hardship redshirt by the NCAA. In 2016, the Hudsonville, Mich. native came back strong, making 35 appearances, tallying a 2.13 ERA with 95 strikeouts, and three complete-game shutouts.

Following her collegiate career, Driesenga was drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch league in 2016. A fifth-round selection, Driesenga joined the Scrap Yard Dawgs as the No. 27 overall pick. As a member of the Houston-based team, she pitched 56.1 innings and compiled a 3.48 ERA.

Driesenga earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Michigan in 2015. In the spring of 2017, she secured her master's in social work from Michigan.
