Mayerova Moves on to ITA Regional Qualifying Finals

The sophomore made a splash in day one, moving on the the qualifying round final
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University tennis sophomore Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) had a strong first day at the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Thursday, Oct. 20, at Michigan State University. The second-year Eagle made her way to the qualifying singles final round with a pair of victories on the first day of competition.
Mayerova began the day with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Princess Gbadamosi from Cleveland State, while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) each grabbed first round victories in the qualifying singles draw. Gogvadze was able to knock off Milwaukee's Alyssa Straub in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Veleva picked up a win after Illinois State's Veronica Golanova retired with the match tied at 6-6 in the first set.
Round two was not as friendly to Eastern Michigan as Gogvadze fell, 6-0, 6-4, and Vleva dropped a 6-1, 6-3 final. Mayerova was able to advance to the final qualifying round with a 7-6, 6-3 win over fellow Mid-American Conference student-athlete Luisa Echeverry from Akron.
Mayerova will take on Aslina Chua Friday, Oct. 21, at 9 a.m. and the rest of the Eagles will be in action for doubles action beginning at 2 p.m. from East Lansing on Friday.
